Hi,
This is something I haven't understood yet. I have not seen any explanations about it:

How would I say in Esperanto "I have eaten" or "I had eaten"?

I guess "mi estas manĝinta" and "mi estis manĝinta" are wrong....? I have never seen anything like that. Could that be used? Surely there must be a way to say that. Using only "mi manĝis" would be too poor, wouldn't it?

Usually, with the simple past tense:

** people had eaten fish bought from a fish vendor
** iuj manĝis fiŝaĵon aĉetitan de fiŝvendisto

** In Samoa, children don’t eat until after their parents have eaten
** En Samoo, infanoj ne manĝas ĝis post kiam siaj gepatroj manĝis.

But if you need to be very precise, you can say: 'estas ..inta':

** Only 16 per cent of over-40s in Britain have eaten an avocado
** Nur 16 procentoj de britoj pli ol 40-jaraĝaj estas manĝintaj avokadon.

'kiam siaj gepatroj manĝis' is recursion; 'si' means a subject of the phrase part.
You need to say 'kiam iliaj gepatroj manĝis'.
The last phrase I would translate
'Nur 16 procentoj da britoj pli ol 40-jaraĝaj iam ajn manĝadis avokadon.'
'Ili estas manĝintaj' means only they are now ('estas') in the state 'manĝintaj' (they ate sometimes in the past).

Also you can add some prefix to the verb:
They have eaten the fish = Ili formanĝis la fiŝon.

Compare passive voice. We have one variant 'La fiŝo estas manĝita' for both 'the fish is eaten' and 'the fish has been eaten'.

So, "mi estas manĝinta" is less used than "I have eaten" in english, but would still be correct and understandable, right?

Estas plia formo 'mi estas manĝinto', uzata pli ofte, sed ne tro; ĉi tie 'manĝinto' estas substantivo (noun).

In Esperanto, you would say "I have eaten" by "mi estas manĝinta" or by "mi manĝis".

In Esperanto, you would say "I had eaten" by "mi estis manĝinta".

When he came I had eaten - Kiam li venis, mi jam manĝis.
You must understand what does English Perfect mean, and translate accordingly.
There is no 1:1 mapping beetween English and Esperanto times.

Reen al la supro
