I think folks may be thinking about this problem incorrectly. Machine translation is not for the immediate future a substitute for human translation or esperanto but a low cost alternative and a supplement.
Google translate is better than nothing for reading street signs, menus and getting the gist of a conversation.
I don't think the choice is human translators vs. 100% automatic translation for documents people care about. The next big step may be products that do say 90% of the work by machine and identify which are the other portions that need human help(which might be either a junior translator or a senior translator or someone with real domain knowledge).
One important point here: Esperanto is far easier to parse than any human language. That may mean that for the next 10-30 years, one will get a much better result writing a document in Esperanto for automatic translation into whatever natural languages require a translation than going from a natural language. I have not seen good documentation on that yet. What I think is that english is just too hard for machines to reliably read.
In the immediate figure there will be a people that do not speak a language well supported by automatic translation. Esperanto provides the lowest overhead way for them to get access to the web via automatic translation if that is their main goal.
Esperanto may also be the most reliable way to communication with machines via a spoken language. Yes, a lot more attention may be put into getting machines to understand natural languages, but there are inherent issues there. I suspect you will have machines doing simple stuff via natural languages, but if you want to instruct them in anything complicated, esperanto will be a lot better.

Tio povas signifi, ke dum la venontaj 10-30 jaroj, oni ricevos multe pli bonan rezulton skribi dokumenton en Esperanto por aŭtomata tradukado en kiajn ajn naturajn lingvojn postulas traduko ol iranta el natura lingvo. Mi ankoraŭ ne vidis bonan dokumentadon. Kion mi pensas estas, ke angla estas nur malfacile por maŝinoj fidinde legi.
En la tuja figuro estos homoj, kiuj ne parolas lingvon bone apogitan per aŭtomata tradukado. Esperanto provizas la plej malaltan vojon por ke ili povu aliri al la retejo per aŭtomata tradukado se tio estas ilia ĉefa celo.

Jes, multe pli atento povas esti metita en akiranta maŝinojn por kompreni naturajn lingvojn, sed ekzistas propraj problemoj tie. Mi suspektas, ke vi havos maŝinojn farante simplajn aĵojn per naturaj lingvoj, sed se vi volas instrui ilin en io ajn komplika, Esperanto multe pli bone.

I believe that machine translation will be the best answer for communication between speakers of different languages in the long run. However, Esperanto will always be around. There is a language revolution taking place and more and more people are getting interested in languages. This is because the internet is exposing more people to the beauty of all languages - especially the lesser known minority languages.
