I think "studento" is confusing.

Japanese word GAKUSEI means something like "studanto" or "lernanto", so DAI-GAKUSEI means university student, SHOU-GAKUSEI means elementary school pupil.

On the other hand, English distingushes between student and pupil, German "Student" and "Schüler", French "étudiant" and "élève".

Without (or even with) this knowledge, misunderstanding can occur.

When a very young Japanese esperantist sais "Mi estas studento.", a European esperantist may misunderstand and think "He is age eight and goes to university? What a clever boy he is!"

logixoul (Montri la profilon) 2005-aŭgusto-25 14:02:34

>Right, the word "studento" isn't really needed; lernanto ("learner"), studanto ("study-er"), and studisto (a full-time student I guess) ought to be enough.

Thanks for that, now I know I was right.

Dankon por tio, nun mi scias mi estis korekta.

>However, there are unfortunately a number of needless English and French borrowings in Esperanto. These useless English and French imports are known as neologismoj (neologisms). The word neologismo of course is itself a neologism, literally meaning nova vorto.

Terrible! That borrowing degrades the language by removing one of its most facinating features - the enormously decreased vocabulary load.

Malbonegen! Tio pruntadi fiŝanĝas la lingvo ĉar ĝi malaligas unu da ĝiaj plij mirigoj - la grandega malgrandiĝo vortaro.

>Not bad. The following is my opinion; I may not be right either.

Thanks for checking.

Dankon por kontroli.

>Bone: Tiam, kiam tiaj vortoj memstaras, ili kutime formiĝas kiel adverboj (malsame ol la Angla, kiu iafoje formas ilin kiel adjektivojn kaj iafoje kiel adverbojn).

Would it be wrong if you started the sentence with "Kiam" instead of "Tiam, kiam"?

Estus ĝi nekorekta se ci malfinas la opinion kun <<Kiam>> anstataŭ <<Tiam, kiam>>?

>Do, Bone! Prave! Ĝuste! Trafe!, kaj tiel plu. Opinias: I assume "opinas" was a misspelling. The root actually ends with the letter i (so, opinias, opinii, etc). Opinias: Mi premisas, ke la vorto "opinas" estis misliterumaĵo. La radiko efektive finiĝas ĉe la litero "i" (do, "opinias", "opinii", ktp).

Yes, it was a misspelling.

Jes, ĝi estis misliterumaĵo.

>Ke: En la Angla, oni iafoje rajtas forlasi tiujn vortojn, kiuj enkondukas subpropoziciojn.

What does "iafoje" mean? According to the dictionary, it means "some kind of sometimes". I don't get it.

Kiu estas <<iafoje>>? Laŭ la vortaro ĝi estas <<some kind of sometimes>>. Mi ne komprendas.

viking_rollo, I agree.

viking_rollo, mi opinias ke vi estas korekta.

Saluton al ĉiuj !

According to the english/esperanto dictionary here, "sometimes" is translated by "foje" or "kelkfoje".

According to the french/esperanto dictionary here, the french equivalent for "sometimes", that is, "parfois", is translated by "kelkafoje" or "kelkfoje" or "iafoje".

Well, I'm not sure using the "a" suffix means something in this case. It is not about a certain kind of time, but about points in the time that are not precised. "Sometimes" is "je iu fojo" or "je iuj fojoj", so when you put it into an adverb it would become "iufoje".

Probably, "foje" is more concise and convenient.

Dankon por tio, nun mi scias mi estis korekta.

Nun vi scias, ke vi estis korekta. okulumo.gif

I apologize in advance if my corections seem overly picky, but the proof-reading helps me also. Discussions about word-usage are interesting to me.

Mi antaŭbedaŭras, se mia korektado ŝajne estas tro elektema, sed la korektado helpas al mi ankaŭ. Diskuti pri vortuzo interesas al mi.

Malbonege_! Tiel pruntadi fiŝanĝas la lingvon ĉar ĝi malaligas (?) unu el ĝiaj plej (?) mirigoj - la grandega malgrandiĝo de la vortaro.

Tiel--not tio--goes here because tio is a noun and can't be used to modify another word in this way. Tiu and the other iu-correlatives are essentially adjectives according to the PMEG, so tiu can't be used here either unless you change pruntadi to pruntado. Actually I think that tiu pruntado might be a better translation for "that borrowing". Tiel pruntadi means something like "to keep on borrowing like that".

La frazo "tiel pruntadi" signifas ion similan al "to keep on borrowing like that".

Lingvon is a direct object and thus need an N (this trips me up a lot too).

La vorto "lingvon" estas rektobjekto, kaj tial bezonas la literon "n". (Tiu multe erarigas min ankaŭ).

I'm not sure what malaligas is. If it's meant to be an -ig version of aliĝi ("to join"), you should know that the root aliĝ- is not actually formed from al plus , but in fact is a French borrowing related to the English word "allegiance" (at least that's what I think). To translate "remove" or "get rid of" I personally prefer forigi, but there are a ton of words that could be used here: neigi, nuligi, detrui, elpreni, forpreni, etc

Mi ne tute scias tion, kion la vorto "malaligas" signifu. Se vi celis, ke ĝi estu IG-formo de la vorto "aliĝi", vi sciu, ke la radiko "aliĝ" efektive ne formiĝis el la vorteroj "al" kaj "iĝ", sed fakte estas Franca pruntaĵo rilata al la Angla vorto "allegiance". (Almenaŭ tiel mi pensas). Por traduki la frazojn "to remove" aŭ "to get rid of", mi mem preferas la vorton "forigi", sed ekzistas multe da vortoj, kiuj povus uziĝi ĉi tie: neigi, nuligi, elpreni, forpreni, detrui, ktp.

Da and numbers are still a bit confusing to me, but I'm pretty sure that unu el ĝiaj is a more suitable translation of "one of its...", since unu is being used as a pronoun rather than an amount here.

Nombroj kaj la prepozicio "da" ankoraŭ iomete konfuzas min, sed mi iom certas, ke la frazo "unu el ĝiaj..." estas pli taŭga traduko de la frazo "one of its...", ĉar la vorto "unu" uziĝas pronomece anstataŭ kvantece ĉi tie.

You seem to be missing an adjective between "plej" and "mirigoj" -- maybe grandaj, bonaj, or gravaj. On the other hand, maybe you meant for "mirigoj" to be "mirigaj"? The implied-noun construction "unu el ĝiaj plej mirigaj" ("one of its most marvelous") would be gramatically permissible, but "unu el ĝiaj plej mirigaj trajtoj" ("one of its most marvelous traits") would be clearer.

Vi ŝajne mankas adjektivon inter la vortoj "plej" kaj "mirigoj" -- eble "grandaj", "bonaj", aŭ "gravaj". Aliflanke, eble vi celis, ke la vorto "mirigoj" estu "mirigaj", ĉu? La kun implicata substantivo konstruaĵo "unu el ĝiaj plej mirigaj" estus gramatike permesata, sed la frazo "unu el ĝiaj plej mirigaj trajtoj" estus pli klara.

The last part I changed to "la grandega malgrandiĝo de la vortaro" ("the huge reduction of the vocabulary") because two nouns can't be put next to each other. One of them must either be formed as an adjective (e.g. "la grandega malgrandiĝo vortara") or be reworded as a prepositional phrase. The phrase "the enourmously decreased vocabulary load" I myself might render as "la ege malpeza vortarŝarĝo".

Yes, one can drop implied T-correlatives if no clarity is lost; it would probably be okay here. Also, this could be rephrased as "kiam tiaj vortoj memstaras, tiam ili kutime...".

Jes, oni povas forlasi implicatajn T-korelativojn, se ne klareco perdiĝus. Kaj verŝajne estus akceptinde ĉi tie. Ankaŭ oni povus rekonstrui ĝin kiel "kiam tiaj vortoj memstaras, tiam ili kutime...".

Kiu estas <<iafoje>>? Laŭ la vortaro ĝi estas <<some kind of sometimes>>. Mi ne komprenas.

The short answer is that iafoje simply means "sometimes". But here comes the long answer...!

The Esperanto word fojo is quite handy. It means "time" in the sense of instance, occurance, etc. So we can make words like dufoje ("twice, two times, on two occasions"), ĉi-foje ("this time, this time around", notice this is not the same as "now"), and so on. Iafoje means "je iaj fojoj" -- that is, roughly, "in some kinds of instances, at some (kinds of) times". It means "sometimes" but implies non-random sometimes-es, in other words. The PMEG seems to use the word iafoje a lot in this sense; that's were I picked it up from.

Of course you can always say foje ("on occasion, at times") for "sometimes". But I just happen to like iafoje.

There are many times in Esperanto that suffixes aren't inforced. Tricks me sometimes.

>I apologize in advance if my corections seem overly picky

The pickier they are, the better. I need picky correctors as I'm just a beginner, so thanks.

La pli elektema ili estas, la pli bona. Mi bezonas elektemuloj ĉar mi estas malfinulo, do dankon.

> I'm not sure what malaligas is.

In the dictionary I read "aligi" means "to add" and I thought "malaligi" ought to mean "to remove".

En la vortaro mi legis ke <<aligi>> signifas <<to add>> kaj mi sciis <<malaligi>> signifu <<to remove>>.

trojo (Montri la profilon) 2005-aŭgusto-26 18:19:08

Ju pli elektema ili estas, des pli bona. Mi bezonas elektemulojn ĉar mi estas malfinulo, do dankon.

Ah cool, I'll continue then.

Ha bone, do mi daŭros.

Esperanto has special prepositions for "the more, the merrier" type constructions: ju and des. These indicate a proportional relationship.

Esperanto havas fakajn prepoziciojn por tiaj konstruaĵoj kiel "ju pli multe, des pli feliĉe", nome la vortojn "ju" kaj "des". Tiuj montras proporcian rilaton.

Also I probably should say something about "malfinulo". It's not really wrong per se, but "komencanto" is more commonly used in this case.

Ankaŭ mi verŝajne diru ion pri la vorto "malfinulo". Ĝi vere ne malĝustas mem, sed la vorto "komencanto" pli ofte uziĝas tiafoje.

En la vortaro mi legis ke <<aligi>> signifas <<to add>> kaj mi sciis, ke <<malaligi>> signifu <<to remove>>.

Well that's probably ok then, though both aligi and malaligi strike me as somewhat odd. I personally like aldoni for "to add" and forigi for "to get rid of". Also I noticed you rendered "thought" as sciis. Why not pensis ("thought")?

Nu tio verŝajne estas akceptinda, kvankam kaj "aligi" kaj "maligi" impresas min iom strange. Mi mem preferas la vorton "aldoni" por "to add" kaj la vorton "forigi" por "to get rid off". Ankaŭ mi rimarkis, ke vi tradukis la vorton "thought" kiel "sciis". Kial ne kiel "pensis"?

logixoul (Montri la profilon) 2005-aŭgusto-26 20:12:24

>Also I probably should say something about "malfinulo". It's not really wrong per se, but "komencanto" is more commonly used in this case.

What's the point in unneccesarilly extending the vocabulary and thus making the learning more difficult? I deliberately will never use roots like komenc. They should be removed, but, as a reform is impossible, it should happen by natural evolution. I will be part of it. And by the way, "malfinanto" seems more appropriate than "malfinulo" (saying that to myself).

Kial oni malbezona multonigus la vortaron, do malfaciligas lerni? Mi intence ne uzos radikojn kiel "komenc". Ili devas malaligi, sed malaligo devas okazi pro natura malrapida pliboniĝo ĉar ekŝanĝo estas neokazebla. Mi estos ero per tio pliboniĝo. Kaj parenteze "malfinanto" estas pli uzinda ol "malfinulo" (mi parolas tiu min).

Many feel similarly about neologisms. The writer of the PMEG even shuns words like substantivo, adverbo, and prepozicio in favor of o-vorto, e-vorto, rolvorteto and the like. I agree with this view to an extent. Also malfinanto is indeed better than malfinulo.

Multaj sentas simile pri neologismoj. La verkinto de PMEG eĉ forlasas vortojn tiajn kiel ekzemple "substantivo", "adverbo", "prepozicio" -- preferante "o-vorto", "e-vorto", "rolvorteto" kaj aliajn similajn. Mi iom akordas al tiu vidpunkto. Ankaŭ "malfinanto" ja estas pli taŭga ol "malfinulo".

* Ĉu "multobligus" celiĝis ĉi tie? Kiel "pliigus" impresas vin?

:: Mi preferus ĉi tie "tiel malfaciligante lerni" aŭ "por malfaciligi lerni".

::* Ĉi tie "ekŝanĝo" impresas iom strange. La vorto "reformo" (aŭ "reformi") ne estas neologismo, ĉar kaj "re-" kaj "form" estas tre uzindaj vorteroj. Laŭ mi "reformo" ŝajne estus plej taŭga. Kiel "ĉar reformo estas malebla" sonas?
