I would say that "amikiĝu" would mean "make friends". I translate "amikumu", loosely, as "hang around with friends". "Do the friend thing", although that sounds bad in English. But I think "amikumu" conveys, at least to me, more of an idea of hanging around with friends than of making new friends.

To me, it means "do friend stuff" - i.e. hanging around with friends, saying hi, mingling with people, making new friends etc. It's a great name for capturing the idea of a social network.
