What do I think? “So what?” pretty much sums it up, I guess.

Esperanto is not a Hindu-European language for the construction of the words.

Metsis:morico,

- simpleco, tio estas.eta nombro da elementoj lerni;
- reguleco, tio estas neniaj esceptoj aŭ tre malmulte;
- klareco, tio estas ĉiu ŝanĝo en la penso estas ankaŭ ŝanĝo en la lingvo;

No. However, this doesn't mean language reform isn't important in Esperanto.

Esperanto is no less Eurocentric and sexist than the average European language. If you say Esperanto is sexist and Eurocentric, you have to call French and Spanish Eurocentric and sexist too. And if you do, well, at least your personal line of reasoning is consistent, but I think French and Spanish speakers would take issue with it.

Furthermore, there is significant scientific evidence that demonstrates Esperanto is the best candidate for an international language(see bottom), as many studies have proven that Esperanto is much easier to learn than any natural language. This success is further attested by the survival of the language decades after its creator's death, and even the acquisition of native speakers, across the globe. One of the most successful businesspeople in the entire world (and a notable philanthropist) is a native Esperanto speaker: George Soros.

And its easy to understand why Esperanto is so successful: there's almost no irregularity, precisely because its artificial. The language was carefully crafted by a skilled linguist and has been watched over practically since birth by a governing body, unlike 99.9% of natlangs, which happen accidentally and have been unregulated for the majority of their life.

Now this doesnt mean Esperanto is perfect; we can and should work to improve the language, so that it can keep evolving and stay relevant to modern lifestyles (such as gender reform). But calling it sexist and Eurocentric could not be more wrong.

Pollukso_Stelfilo:

The vocabulary is clearly eurocentric. It is based upon the six most wide-spread languages in Europe: French, Italian, Spanish, German, English and Russian. All of them have their homes in Europe and are of Indo-European descendance. Neither are langauges of Europe not belonging to the IE family taken into account, like Finnish, Hungarian and Basque nor non-European ones like Chinese, Swahili, Mongolic, Indonesian, Aztec and Aleutic.
Yes, as a language it's, no doubts, eurocentric. It's evident and... irrelevant. Culturally and politically it's not and every thing from any culture can be attached to it.

Pollukso_Stelfilo:
Esperanto lacks word stems that describe female people. Instead the male words are made female with a suffix (-in).
viro -> man, virino -> woman / knabo -> boy, knabino -> girl / frato -> brother, fratino -> sister, patro -> father, patrino -> mother
and worst of all: fraŭlo -> bachelor, fraŭlino -> maid
So, it would be like saying "brothress" and "boyess" instead of sister and girl. The last example is especially strange, because "fraŭlo" is derived from German "fräulein" which means "young unmarried woman" and has no male equivalent in that language but Esperanto makes it male in its unaltered form and then female with a suffix too.

What do you lot think about this?
I think that this discussion is stupid, endless and senseless. A language only can be sexist if it's created specifically to be sexist. What you say is just an opinion based in two things. First: some people doesn't like the option taken by Zamenhof to do that. Second: some people's obsessed viewing sexism under the stones. Anyway the option taken by Zamenhof to do that has no effect, at all, in women's rights and their position as persons. That's a fact, not an opinion and lies aren't going to change that.

Your questions are old, tiring, long discussed and, because of that, annoying.

Pollukso_Stelfilo:Many critics claim that Esperanto is unfit as a truly international language and far from neutral for being eurocentric and sexist.

Sexist? Really? I don't know that it is possible for a language to be sexist. Esperantists can certainly be sexist, but Esperanto is not sexist just because old Zamenhof used a bit of optimization. Sure, I'm betting that the patriarchal society of the time had some (a lot) of influence on his decision to make male the default gender of gender-related words. Note that in modern usage these are the only male-default roots (and words such as kuracisto are default gender-less).

The lack of female word stems is an odd complaint, given that English also has no unique word for a female human (wo-man is pretty similar-looking to vir-ino). Have you ever heard of anyone complaining that the word "woman" is sexist? I think I might start saying that all gender-identifying words are sexist, so "sister" and "mother" should be boycotted. okulumo.gif

Your "boyess" example is nonsense. Root combinations in Esperanto are "first class citizens" of the language, and they are no less cohesive/independent than single-root words. You are showing a lack of understanding of the language here.

This topic has been pretty solidly hashed out amongst the Esperanto community (at least, the online version I saw) over a considerable period of time. If you haven't been a regular participant in the Esperanto community, it is certainly understandable why you are behind the times. But this is nothing new.

In Esperanto, the only nouns whose genders are male by default are the family nouns. All other nouns are neutral by default. "Kato" does not mean a tomcat, nor does it mean a momcat; it just means a cat. But, yes, the "human" forms do default to male. I haven't counted them, but that amounts to, what? six words? Patro, frato, onklo, nepo... there's probably a few more, but you get the picture. I'm going with six. So, the language is "sexist" because roughly six words default to male?

That's just a troll position at this point.

When I see the words "patro" and "patrino", I just don't see a hierarchy at play. One has a syllable the other lacks, but... whatever. That "-in"suffix isn't some scarlet letter-combo, forever condemning its wearer to the edges of society. It just means we're talking about a female. That's it. If it wasn't there, we'd be talking about a male. That's it. Deal with it. There's no power play here. It's just a form of identification.
