Hi everyone,

I have some questions about pronunciation that I'd like to ask. It seems to me that
a word with "ei", if spoken quickly, would sound exactly the same as "ej".

My thinking is that in order to make certain that a listener knows which one you're
saying, you need to pronounce the former with 2 separate syllables "e", and then "i"
whereas for "ej" you must pronounce it with only one syllable, sounding like "ay" from
the english word "play".

Am I correct in my thinking?

Pronounce "ei" as two separate vowels: "kré-i"
"Ej" before vowel also is pronounce separately: "ku-i-ré-jo"

So does the listener just rely on memorization and prior knowledge of words to make this distinction? For example, if I hear "krei", I know it's "ei" just because I recognize the word "krei".

But aside from just knowing that via prior knowledge, to me the capitalized part in krEI sounds exactly the same as the capitalized part in kuirEJo.

In "héj-mo" "ej" is pronounced as "ay" in "day"
In "ku-i-ré-jo" "jo" is prounounced as "your" (not accented)
In "kré-i" "i" is prononced as "ee" in "see" (not accented and more short)

I think that technically, in kuirejo, it's ku-ir-ej-o instead of ku-i-re-jo. Because isn't the dipthong supposed to be a single syllable? (I'm seperating the syllables with hyphens, and I assume you're doing the same)

You can divide word by morphems: kuir-ej-o or by syllables: ku-i-re-jo. To pronounce you must divide by syllables, to understand the meaning divide by morphems.

Jam en la Fundamento Zamenhof uzadis streketon ' por disigi morfemojn kaj dividstrekon - por disigi silabojn.

Kaj la morfemlimoj ne egalas la silablimojn, ekz citron'o kaj ci-tro-no; esper'ant'o kaj es-pe-ran-to (aŭ eble e-spe-ran-to); kaj kiel Sergej tute ĝuste skribis: kuir'ej'o kaj ku-i-re-jo.

Ankaŭ en la angla ekzistas hiatoj, ekzemple: reevaluate, kiu enhavas la hiaton iːɪ. Prononcu "reevaluate" kaj anstataŭigu la unua per ɪ. Nun vi havas la esperantan hiaton kiel en "diino". Anstataŭigu la unua ɪ per eɛ, kaj vi havas la hiaton de "krei".

ku-i-re-je: shoe in a box
ku-i-re-je: yes
