What sort of lodging is likely to be available at a large Esperanto event like the world congress in Reykjavik next year?

My wife and I have been studying Esperanto for several months but we have never been to any Esperanto gathering. We are hoping to go to Reykjavik and we were wondering if something more economical than a hotel room will be avialblle. (But we do want a room for just the two of us.)

Thanks very much.

Normally and also at the last congress we could choose various prices.

Between the Hotel Melia Hanoj (5 stars) with the price of 99.00 Euros per person (double occupancy) and Huong Gian Hotel (1 star) with the price of 17.00 Euros per person (double occupancy).

They usually have a variety of suggested hotels at various price ranges but lots of people arrange their own lodging. It's much cheaper if you don't stay at the main hotel attached to the convention center.

The very cheapest lodging is a place on the floor of a school or gymnasium, you bring your own sleeping bag and mat. That's called the "amasloĝejo" and it's popular with youths; it's an affordable way for them to participate.

If I were you, I'd start looking up youth hostels and budget hotels. My experience has been that a budget hotel is usually a bit cheaper than a youth hostel if you're looking at a private room for two, but a hostel is cheaper if you're willing to have a room shared with others. The toilet and shower may not be private to your room, depending on the hostel.

I would be inclined to rely on yourself rather than on the UEA. They give a range of price options but you might find cheaper than what they're offering.

As Erinja says, at Esperanto Congresses there are usually a variety of options offered by the organizers (it differs with different events) and you can always arrange the accommodation independently.

As organizer of a congress in the Spring of 2013 in my home town of Ramsgate, I am hoping to arrange a block booking of a budget hotel near the kongresejo, but it won't be obligatory for aliĝintoj to take one of those rooms, if they would prefer greater luxury.

In my experience you should always check by yourself on some hostel finding website what kind of accomodation is available and how much it costs.

The offers of UEA are often more expensive than what you pay if you book by yourself.
