I think that lernu.net is awesome and it would be great with a similar site for learning of other languages like german, spanish or french. Is there?

Hey,

it's a great idea but I don't think that there are websites like this for other languages since people want to earn money when they offer information. Unfortunately...

E@I; lernu!, which is a project of E@I; and ESF, which has funded lernu! all seem to be open to the possibility of developing internet instruction of other languages:

[LISTO]
"[One of] the main goals for achieving this [is] supporting education about, and usage of, languages and Internet technologies." -- ikso.net
"[lernu!] is also a sort of experiment in learning languages online, without a teacher, and without classes." -- lernu.net
"The Esperantic Studies Foundation has a strong interest in [making the internet] suitable for all written languages, and [using] it for language learning and teaching." -- esperantic.org[/list]All of these quotes seem to me to refer to multiple languages, not just Esperanto.

It would be great, but the point of lernu is really based around the point of Esperanto. If you mean a site in a similar format for other languages, then yes, there should be more, but as a fork of lernu, I don't really think it makes sense.

I don't think there will be one for other languages soon, it's very costly IMO. And I think materials for those languages would be more common than for Esperanto, you could probably have those in your high school, or in the nearest center of higher education.

Also, I think that it was terribly nice of E@I to offer lernu! for free that I feel guilty skipping my lessons. I mean people worked hard for this website, and hardly any, if any get paid at all. And I am thankful to those nice people who make Esperanto available, every day. You should too. Not to discourage but, why learn other languages when you're at the site of la lingvo de amikeco.

Lernu! is only possible because there are people who want to propagate Esperanto in this way. It depends on having the right sort of activists. Other languages and associated cultures do have their 'missionary organisations', such as the British Council for English (no doubt there's one for American English as well), Alliance Francais for French, the Goethe Institute for German, etc.

There are actually many sites that offer free (or partly free) language courses. word2word.com links to many of them okulumo.gif

I don't think Lernu should focus on any languages other than Esperanto, because we need to promote only one International Auxiliary Language.

But if you just want to find good websites to learn other languages, there are plenty. I don't know about Spanish and French (I speak Spanish, but I didn't learn it online), but I know of a great site for learning German. It's called Deutsche Welle ("German Wave").

Try the Interactive Course ("Deutsch Interaktiv"). Also, there are news articles which are updated every day that you can listen to as well as read, and they are spoken very clearly for people who are learning German. Those are very helpful if you're having trouble with German pronunciation, because you can read the article and follow along with the spoken version of it.
