I know that many on this site learned or are learning Esperanto just to experience its ease, or to use it as a gateway to other languages, or to gain insight into other cultures through other Esperanto speakers.... but for those who maybe want to become more active in promoting it or somesuch, I think that this petition has a chance to at least make Esperanto a little more appreciated. (Perhaps also to make it more known to countries where it is barely known of, like the US.) It has been on the Esperanto forums before, but there are many who stay on the English forum only...

I would like for Esperanto to be more widely spoken, but my focus has to be on learning it first ridulo.gif

I am just learning Esperanto but like you I think it deserves more publicity. I contacted FIFA who organise the World Cup and suggested that before every game all players use the single word 'Saluton' when shaking hands. A multilingual situation that Esperanto was designed for in a country that is one of it's biggest users. I intended contacting players via their social media sites to drive the idea from the ground upwards, with no work required by FIFA except their endorsement.
FIFA declined the opportunity stating that they already had an initiative. This was 'The Handshake for Peace'that players and officials would use, which arose after they linked up with The Nobel Peace Centre in Norway.
This is an idea that I thought fitted perfectly with the 'Saluton' idea???.
Anyway, I was wandering if it could become a fan-based initiative, especially in Brazil.
I've got a few more ideas, but would like to hear from other people, not just those interested in football. You can send comments direct to me at terry.eagles@hotmail.co.uk or just use the forum. Terry.
