Duolingo - Release date keeps changing

I have never used Duolingo but I am looking forward to trying it out with Esperanto. I already downloaded it on my phone.

I noticed that the release date keeps changing. It was April 9 and then it was changed to to April 12. I just checked it and it said April 14.

Anyway, I am waiting in anticipation. I have heard that Duolingo is a really good app.

Also, I found this interesting. This is the number of learners per language on Duolingo:

It's an estimated release date.
A progam guesses when they'll finish.

The course leader said they'll be finished mid may

Insofar as Duolingo's estimation, I would trust it. I recall that the course designers do have control over when it says, so Duolingo could just be encouraging a tighter deadline and they're acting accordingly.

It seems that the May quote was made two weeks ago, so I would venture a guess that Duolingo is waiting until they have just enough content to release and test with (April). Afterwards, the team will probably keep adding onto it, finishing with everything they have scheduled mid-May, then proceed to patch any holes and add more notes to get it graduated into phase 3.

Unless you read somewhere that the designers have control, I would say it doesn't. I've been looking at the Esperanto course for a while, and the estimated completion date is extremely sporadic. I think the estimation is based on "if they keep progressing at this rate, then it will be completed at this time". It's very flawed because the percentage moves around a lot, sometimes jumps up a lot of points or stalls for a few weeks.

I would stick with the mid-may estimation because it seems like they have quite a bit of work ahead of them

"We've reached a major milestone today: almost all the most important words are now in the course! All we have to do now is add a few more common missing words, make sentences for each word, proofread and revise the Notes. The finish line doesn't feel too far away!"

- Add less important words
- Proofreading
- Adding grammar sentences and descriptions
- Final testing

Then they'll release it.

Yeah I've been watching Duolingo too. Once a course reaches 100% it's normally a week or two before they're released to the public (as a Beta). Presumably this is a period of checking and final testing.

I'd put money on over 100K learners by the end of the year.

They actually have no control whatsoever over that date, which is only a rough guide. For example, if they add 0.5% to the course then the program estimates what would happen if they add 0.5% every day. Seeing as the progress is not the same every day, the estimated date changes every day. Its much better to follow the course here which shows the level of progress every day (they're currently on 90%).

The people working on the date have given mid-May as the estimated completion date, but this is a conservative date (its better over-achieve than under-promise) so there's a decent chance they will be done mid-April.

I had the good fortune of meeting one of the Duolinguo developers in person earlier this month, and sampled some of their work behind-the-scenes.

There is quite a lot of material to proof, and from what I could tell, each module required a fair amount of attention (developing multiple good translations of a single sentence, natural-sounding texts, etc). This isn't a project the creators can just breeze through.

I'd prefer that the release date be later rather than sooner, if this means more attention to quality.

But it will be finally ready, and not in the too-distant future.

Same here, I will gladly wait for a good course. Force-meeting deadlines simply means a bug-filled and incomplete release. It is ready when it is ready, and I respect the effort these people are putting in by not worrying about it until it is released.
