Heh. I've been using Esperanto on a daily basis for the last three years (almost exactly three, as a matter of fact, as it was October of 2005 that I started), and I STILL forget sometimes to use the accusative and plural rules.

My blog is in Esperanto, and after making a post I will continue editing it on and off for the next several DAYS, because I don't always catch the omissions the first few times through.

Think of it this way: "ĝiaj nomoj" means exactly the same thing as "nomoj de ĝi", i.e. more than one name belonging to a singular thing. The plural ending of "ĝiaj" doesn't mean that there's more than one "it", that's there just for noun-adjective agreement (because "nomoj" is plural).

"Ili" is the pronoun used in Esperanto for any third-person plural, whether male or female, animate or inanimate, human or animal or vegetable or mineral.

On a side note, I believe there are some languages that don't have a special word for "they", but just pluralize their words for "he", "she", or "it". I think Quechua works this way... but definitely not Esperanto.

... „Ĝi“ estas uzata ankaŭ por paroli pri besto, eĉ kiam ĝia sekso estas konata.

"Pluraj konataj aferoj aŭ personoj" ("multiple known things or persons") is pretty broad. It includes pretty much everything, in fact.

The usage note for ĝi, indicating it is used to speak about an animal "even when its sex is known", means that ĝi is generally used to refer to a (singular) animal instead of "li" or "ŝi" even if you know what gender the animal in question is. For more than one animal, use "ili".

Zamenhof would back me up on that. Here's a quote from Zamenhof's translation of the Bible (Genezo 1:24-25). Note the repeated use of "ili" to refer to the "beasts of the Earth", etc.:

Kaj Dio diris: La tero aperigu vivajn estaĵojn, laŭ ilia speco, brutojn kaj rampaĵojn kaj surterajn bestojn, laŭ ilia speco; kaj fariĝis tiel. Kaj Dio kreis la bestojn de la tero, laŭ ilia speco, kaj la brutojn, laŭ ilia speco, kaj ĉiujn rampaĵojn de la tero, laŭ ilia speco.
