did they show the movie with those awful English subtitles or without subtitles?

On the DVD you can only choose between English and French subtitles. However, the English subtitles are ugly because they also have some "background", so a big part of the picture ist covered by them.

Also, the French subtitles can only be chosen when you enter a submenu, you can't select them at the usual main menu.
