I am in Boy Scouts of America.  I thought it strange that there aren't many refrences to any type of language.  There isn't much about language learning anywhere!  This makes finding esperanto all the more harder, because only international groups exist, and official boy scout pages make now refrences to them.

Why?!?

Pardonu min, to clarify you are a boy-scout trying to find info on esperanto and language learning in general through the boy scouts?

i'll assume so for the time being.  Well, the Boy Scouts of America is probably one of the most patriotic organizations in Usono (thats the U.S.).  I assume because of this that the sentiment at Boy Scouts HQ is that it is Unpatriotic to learn any language other than English because this is the official language of the U.S.  

Now for esperanto, believe me, there are plenty (and i mean plenty) of North American esperanto groups.  Theres the Esperanto League of North America, continental chapters of the Universala Esperanto Asocio, and many many more (off the top of my head i can't think of anyothers).  And both these organizations have many local chapters spanning Usono. 

For language learning in general, there are many different types of courses out there.  Many colleges offer language courses to non-graduate students and even many high schools have night classes for languages that aren't offered in their standard curriculum.  I know at my high school, the languages offered through the standard curricullum are Spanish, German, and French, but there are night courses for anyone who wants to sign up for Italian, and Russian.  If you want to find info about local government-sponsored language learning courses, go to your public library or even a government office.  But as for the Boy Scouts, I don't think you'll get much help from them as they are namely pro-English pro-American.

I'm new to Esperanto and an Eagle Scout.  Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the scouting movement, promoted Esperanto as a 'secret language' for Scouts.  In the Boy Scout manual, Esperanto is the example sited for the Translator award.  Scouting's world-wide reach and the brotherhood of its members across cultures made this a logical connection.  The Skolto Esperanto Ligo has existed since 1918; web site is http://www.nrg.to/sel/

 

 

boy-o, your comments are are divisive as they are incorrect.

-English is not the "official" language of the USA.

-The BSA, while a patriotic organization, promotes peace, civic duty, and cultural awareness.

-Interpreter strips can be earned by scouts to display to others which languages are spoken by that scout.  Helpful during jamborees.  This program is actively encouraged by BSA.

To make assumptions about what you think, but don't know about the BSA, and draw a conclusion about what they do and don't do is fairly ignorant.  If you don't know something, better to remain silent than to pass your guesses off as helpful answers.

Esperanto is supposed to be a language to promote peace.  To give people a politically neutral way to share ideas.  Doesn't help when those in its own community essentially accuse others of xenophobia based only on assumptions.
