I don't recall that when I was learning Esperanto that KROM presented any difficulty. Perhaps that was because "apart from" seemed to cover the same semantic territory.

Mi bone memoras kiel ĉe miaj fruaj internaciaj kongresoj certa profesoro (edzo) ofte vidiĝis akompanata de skandinavia belulino (kiu ne estis lia edzino). Oni nomis ŝin (kaŝe) lia kongresa kromvirino.
