T0dd:Wow, I haven't been to *any* Esperanto event, or spoken face-to-face in...years. Philadelphia is an Esperanto desert, despite being the 5th largest city in the US. I'm still the only person on Amikumu in the city. I really miss speaking Esperanto.
Do you ever leave Philly to go anywhere else, visiting relatives or whatnot? I used to make a point of trying to meet up with local speakers (even if just for coffee) whenever I travelled to another city. Also, there are speakers in Baltimore, at least a few, which isn't exactly close to you, but maybe you could organize a meeting at some sort of half-way point with them?

Also, I don't know what your housing situation is, but if you're willing to host foreign visitors occasionally, I would sign up for Pasporta Servo. Philadelphia is a city that draws plenty of tourists, and I can imagine that if you signed up as a host, you should get at least a couple Esperanto-speaking visitors per year.

What's the easiest way to sign up to Pasporto Servo that doesn't cost me $100

Signing up to Pasporta Servo is free if you agree to list yourself in the guide as a host.

If you want the book only, but do not want to sign up as a host, it costs money. The cost for that is $20-25 USD, depending on exchange rate.

Is it just me, or was the Aliĝilo REALLY hard to understand? It seemed like i didn't know any word on that page! I signed up as a host (I think!), and I clicked Sendu. Now what happens? They send me a book next year? I had to look up practically EVERY word on the page! I was getting tired. I haven't done that in a long time! Maybe that was Esperanto 401, or I've been reading to muĉ Americanized Esperanto....

Sign-up cuts off the first of November, then you'll receive your book in the mail sometime after that.

The vocabulary used on the page is not particularly hard. I think you just weren't familiar with it because you haven't done a lot of signing up for things in Esperanto. The types of words used have to do with housing, guests, hosts, sleeping arrangements, how far in advance you want to be notified, etc. These aren't normally words that come up in everyday conversation, and they aren't words you are likely to encounter in stories or news articles. But they are common on Esperanto sign-up forms for conventions, etc.

I'm closer to NYC, so that would be the best bet. I missed the ELNA congress due to a family medical situation. I travel up to RI, where I'm originally from, semi-regularly, but never connected with any Esperanto speakers there. I'm hoping that Amikumu will make this sort of thing easier. As for hosting travelers, I'd be fine with it but my wife is less enthusiastic. Todd

I used to know two people in RI but they don't live there anymore. Let me ask around, though. I know a lot of people in New England and someone might know someone else in Rhode Island.

What part of RI? If it's in the north, it may be fairly easy for you to meet up with some of the MA Esperantists.

I would join the Yahoo Groups list of ESNA http://groups.yahoo.com/group/esna/ and send them a message before your next trip up to the region. Someone might be willing to meet up with you. If you happen to be up there during the monthly Esperanto lunch in Boston, that might be worth attending as well. There are pretty good commuter rail links between RI and Boston, even if you don't have a car with you.

So, even though I sign up, I won't get a book until AFTER next November? malgajo.gif

Not unless you want to buy one from a book service before then. It's only printed once a year, and you get the book for the year that has your name printed in it.

That's an idea. I usually drive up. Of course, when I go I'm usually visiting family, but a ride up to Boston might not be bad. Meanwhile, I'm going to try to get to one of the NY meetings. And the Baltimore idea is good too, since that's about as far as NY.
