need help with pronunciation uj and c

anyone know where I can go online to hear words pronunced. Seems to be a lack of help here, especially with the dipthongs. I am a new student (about 2 months) and most books and courses I have worked with either ignor or give conflicting examples of how to pronunce some of the dipthongs...especially the uj. I also need to know if the hat over the j eliminates the dipthongs sound. I would also like to hear an expert pronunce the word scii. Thanks for any help here.

Mi ne konas rektas prononchelpon, sed se vi simple aŭskultas bone parolatan Esperanton, vi trovos la elparolon de la vortojn kiujn vi mencias. Certe ankaŭ en Youtube vi trovos multajn fimetojn kun parolata Esperanto.

Hi,

There is abundant spoken material in Esperanto online. I don't know direct pronunciation help, but if you just listen to well-spoken Esperanto, you will find the correct pronunciation of the words you mention.
Listen for example to Varsovia Vento (http://www.podkasto.net/) or Radio Muzaiko (http://muzaiko.info/)
Certainly also on Youtube you will find many videos with spoken Esperanto.

uj = Imagine the Esperanto U + wi like how French say yes, so it sounds like Uwi

scii =
S = snake

The hat over the J gives you the letter ĵ, pronounced like "zh" (like the sound in the middle of the word "pleasure", which would be written as "pleĵur" in Esperanto)

Therefore there is no dipthong in the uĵ combination. It would be pronounced as "oozh". As far as I'm aware this combination never appears in Esperanto, however, so you probably don't need to worry about it.

scii = two syllables; stsee-ee.

The sts sound is frequently found at the end of English words. It seems tricky to English speakers because we aren't used to having this sound in the beginning of a word. But if you can pronounce the word "tests", then you can say "sts" (written as sc in Esperanto).

That's how many people pronounce it, but I'm not sure that it's the correct way. Afterall, wouldn't 'uwi' be written as 'uŭi'?

Hm, I've never heard of that. I wonder why one would bother to use an unofficial suffix for "good," when "bon-" can be used perfectly well as a prefix...

I thought I had heard all of the proposed changes, but this is a new one to me! It must be truly very few people who use it.

uwi would be written as uŭi but uwi is the best way to render this sound in English.

The example I like to give is the Spanish word "muy". Lots of people are familiar with expressions like "muy bien". The uy in "muy" is the same as the uj sound in Esperanto.

It was new to me a year ago! I only read about it in the first post in that thread, which linked to a blog.

I'd completely forgotten about it in the meantime. Evidently I have not heard it used even once in the year between then and now, so I forgot its existence entirely rideto.gif
