ceigered:I don't understand, why somebody should be ashamed not knowing every literature which is (not) translated to some language. (Including Esperanto language)
But that seems like a good sort of question, if a lower-mid-range Esperantist like me had trouble answering without study. Makes'em wonder how deep the rabbit hole really goes if they didn't already know how much had been translated...

qwertz:They wouldn't feel ashamed. They might want to know more though, e.g. "oh, I didn't realise that there was so much translated into Esperanto. I wonder how much has really been translated? I'm gonna research that now!".ceigered:I don't understand, why somebody should be ashamed not knowing every literature which is (not) translated to some language. (Including Esperanto language)

Only those who claim to know everything or claimed to know how much had been translated but didn't actually ever research it should feel a bit ashamed

Radio~!:With the exception of one man (who proclaimed himself to be a fascist), I've always found people at the show to be fairly positive and open about Esperanto.Oh, he was amazing, wasn't he?!
And it wasn't Esperanto itself that he was negative about, since he had a pretty broad knowledge of it and language in general; it was the Esperantists, just not in the usual sense. It was because he'd gone to the London Esperanto Club and everybody made him feel very welcome, until he told them that he was a fascist, at which point no-one really wanted to talk to him! "So much for tolerance for all people and cultures", mumbled the man whose political identity was predicated on intolerance of anybody different.
The taster language session is indeed new - Marteno did very well to secure a slot for EABElizabeth Stanley did a really good one about, oh, four years ago that went down very well. It's a shame that we've not been able to do one since until this year.
I'll wish you luck, Terry. We'll be sending down a goody-bag, including the DVD-ROM "A taste of Esperanto" featuring seven Esperanto bands' songs, a talk from John Wells, and the documentary Esperanto Estas. There will be one-off items for show too, such as the beautiful translation of Winnie the Pooh, which went down a treat with a presented when I took it with me to a radio interview.
Despite my recollection that standing all day knackers up one's foot-arches horribly, I'm sure it will be a worthwhile day out, even though I wanted you to come to Barlaston and participate in the Drondo

I sometimes think that it wouldn't be a bad thing if we had more right-wing Esperantists (perhaps not from the extreme right though).
That personality type tends to be rather good at getting things done, and the attraction of Esperanto for them would be that it keeps the 'foreigners' at bay - preventing the discomfort of having to put up with a mispronounced mangling of ones mother tongue.
A few wicked bankers, might also be a welcome addition to the team. Think what they might be able to do with EAB's capital

To be honest, I'd rather do without such anti-foreigner sentiment.

sudanglo:But I expect I'll solve the all-day standing problem as I did last year, by purloining an unused chair from another stand. Why am I not surprised?! I expect it was only unused for a couple of seconds before you got your hands on it too!
I sometimes think that it wouldn't be a bad thing if we had more right-wing Esperantists (perhaps not from the extreme right though)."Perhaps", haha! Ever the comedian.
That personality type tends to be rather good at getting things done,But only if there's profit in it for them!

It all comes down to individuals really, Terry, you know that. But yes, I too would like to see a bit more variety and would welcome some people who are right of centre, not least when I'm hosting a Drondo weekend and can't stoke up any arguments or discussions because everyone in the room wants to see the end of capitalism etc. I really need to get you coming to one of them; you can play the antagonist role that I used to do before I took over the chair. Nice village pub to attend too

A few wicked bankers, might also be a welcome addition to the team. Think what they might be able to do with EAB's capitalI don't know what you expect us to do with our investments, Terry. If you retired today your pension would be 30% smaller than in 2008, the year when the collapse kicked in! Why? Because the stock market is putrid, "the worst financial crisis in history" and interest rates are deplorable. (When I took over the mantle of the NoJEF charity I found a six-figure account paying 0.2%!).
We're doing as well as can be expected, bringing in enough to pay our staff, office costs, education programme, five figures for publicity, run our events and so on. I doubt anyone's churning money hand over fist in an ethical way or, at least, in one that minimises risk. And since our house rides on our making "prudent decisions" for EAB, don't expect to see me or Clare putting the assets on the horses

Chainy:To be honest, I'd rather do without such anti-foreigner sentiment.I'd like to go one step further and say, "let us be in contact with the noble savages, that we might learn from them and teach them of our ways, to mutually benefit as a unified human race."
- Captain James T. Cook of the starship USS Endeavour, if history serves me correctly.
Timtim:can't stoke up any arguments or discussions because everyone in the room wants to see the end of capitalism etcSounds like these guys are on the top-left of the political compass!.
Great thing about being on the bottom-left is that you get capitalism and caring for society at the same time. And free Mars bars.

ceigered:Sounds like these guys are on the top-left of the political compass!.I'd be intrigued to know! The October meeting usually coincides with the annual meeting of Sennacia Asocio Tutmonda en Britujo so there's not much variety when discussing the financial crisis etc.
I might ask them to complete the political compass just for experimentation's sake.
I imagine Terry (SudAnglo)would create quite the impression were he present to join in the discussion groups. I love watching him forget all tact when asked a question; he's brilliant!
