erinja:Perhaps they see it that way because ESF has achieved so many concrete results with its money, and I haven't seen so much in the way of concrete results from a lot of UEA activities.
Perhaps concrete results are harder for the UEA because its objectives aren't as tangible and visible as ESF's.

When you have objectives, for instance, like improving lernu's interface or supporting the Thai national association, it's tricky to say upfront which one is more effective.

erinja:No, "ne volas" was what I said. So technically their motto would be "ne povas, ne devas".

UEA claims some degree of credit for lernu by including information on lernu's progress in their annual report. But in fact they haven't donated a single cent to the project!
I have difficulties to comment in English, but I will try. At first about Esperanto Internacia. Esperanto Internacia is an international foundations with only two aims: To inform people about Esperanto and to promote Esperanto-teaching. It isn´t possible to compare UEA with Esperanto Internacia. UEA mainly have other aims. UEA represent the Esperanto-movement and provides services to the members. There is no duplication of activities. UEA in 2009 spent 4394 EUR for activities in relation with Esperanto-information (normal budget). This is 0.95% of the budget in 2009. So in my opinion the truth is “Ne povas”, ĉar ne volas”. UEA needs the whole money because of the administration and services. Spending the money for administration and services UEA don´t can sustain other projects. To sustain projects like Lernu.net or other projects UEA need to change structures but that is a long and difficult way (without any garanty to success). “Ne volas” signifas that you have to change the minds of hundreds of people (especially comittee).

If anybody want´s to sustain special activities they can do it donating to the UEA-foundation or any other foundation, like ESF. Also in this case there is no duplication. More money and more people means more activities. If anybody want to give money (after the death) to UEA or any foundation it is very important to define for which aims the money have to be used.

I know, I'm just offering them a suggestion for it okulumo.gif

I guess this lies in the problem of their "universal" title, since it gives the impression that all that happens under the sun in Esperantujo must in some way be tied to the UEA?

Yes, I think that many UEA members (and many of their leadership) believe that all Esperanto activities should be connected somehow to UEA.

I disagree. I think that Esperanto Internacia has many great ideas for how to do things that UEA isn't doing, and of course ESF also does a lot of good work.

I really don't understand that "Esperanto-movement"-thing. Does it mean some kind of being brainwashed/closed-minded to some world domination idea using Esperanto language from the beginning of childhood to dead?

So, UEA's main mission is to celebrate themselve? So, they will clear away if the can not finance one of nexts UEA self-praising and puffed-up congresses or run one of them into big fincancial desaster? Well, so they already seem to have reached their "finvenka" aim: creation of an isolated closed circle prototype named "UEA-Esperantujo". No slightly motivation left to change something. What a kind of intellectual idleness.
