For the past few weeks I'm noticing that it's only when I am damn sad I come to Lernu! or Tekstaro. I know another guy in the ChatRoom who is gloomy most of the time. I won't name him.

It is just that I was wondering how common this is. Is the language a way to escape for people just like alcohol or pornography?

Maybe you need to deal with whatever it is that you are sad about. A confidential chat with a friend over a cup of strong tea might help!

I never try to escape from pornography. I love it and it brings me pleasure. However, if Esperanto is helping you to keep your sanity, then Esperanto is a winner. Besides, what is wrong in being a loser? Christ was considered a loser at his time.

I came to Esperanto after reading Zamenhof's original book, inspired by his high ideals.

Also, look at the passion & hard work that goes into this site & into the Esperanto movement. People are doing things and making things happen.

That does not seem like the actions of 'losers' to me. Quite the opposite in fact.

I voted no, but I would have voted for a "whatever you want it to be" option if it was available.

People use many things as a distraction, outlet, comfort blanket, you name it, just as many people use whatever they can to give themselves a sense of greater identity, be it alternative culture, no culture at all, trying to beat everyone at everything or trying to victimise ones self.

Maybe you find the EO environment stable, or at least are confident in it enough, to retreat here after mental distress. Particularly if you're having problems in life that you feel unable to deal with, even if you have similar problems in Esperantujo, at least in Esperantujo you don't feel quite as stressed or as if there's as bad repercussions if something goes wrong.

Overall though, it's probably best you ponder it yourself or through whatever means you like, could be revealing about yourself, about Esperanto, about life in general.

Regardless, one thing that gives me mental stability without having to rely on any temporary obsessions etc is just thinking about how as long as I have a volition and the ability to act on it, I can take part in this interconnected universe and shape it the way I like, with who I like, etc. Helps put more worldly complications in perspective okulumo.gif

I am that way, Vizaĝetoj: a mixed bunch of philosophies. Thank you for remarking it.

I wouldn't say that Esperanto is for losers, nor that it is certain that it is a lost cause.

Though the movement has in the past perhaps attracted an unfair percentage of people who for one reason or another feel marginalised in their own society.

On the other hand there are people in the movement who are incredibly industrious or creative in their contribution and who are very firmly committed to the cause.

Zamenhof's output was prodigious. Or, think of Waringhien's hours of dedication in his contribution to PIV and PAG.

This particular forum exists in its own reality. I dont find it all that interesting to post here. But come here only when sad? Maybe try a chat channel somewhere, IRC or something. I respect this forum for it is its own rebellion from the central committee of Esperanto, but its a bit too babyish to be very serious for me. In fact many aspects of this forum deflect me from Esperanto.

Esperanto is for those who have hope. (:

And as a loser, I can confirm that it's for losers and non-losers alike.

I learned by watching British television that a cup of tea solves any life problem you might have.

But maybe for you, the lernu forums are your cup of tea okulumo.gif
