Ok, I have started my new years resolution a bit early, and decided I am going to learn to at least read and write Esperanto.

I have purchased the book "Esperanto Learning and Using the International Language" and joined this site. What else do you recommend?

Depends on your needs. Maybe try to browse through lernu.net mainpage~courses or lernu.net mainpage~learning first. That could give some feeling of Esperanto language.

Regarding spoken Esperanto I would recommend Mi estas komencanto to dive into. Joining Skype conferences could very motivating, too. Depending at the Skype session written chat could be "allowed", too. So, there are many possibilities to dive into. Try to find out yourself, which one could motivate you mostly long-term.

lernu has a ton of resources, so it can seem overwhelming to a person who is new to the site. Lots of people have learnt the language to near fluency using only this site. However I really like the book you've bought, so I think it was a good buy.

This page has a suggested progression of courses if you want to do courses at lernu. They're all free, and it's a good chance to get your lessons corrected by a tutor and your errors explained to you. If I remember correctly, the book you bought has an answer key for the exercises. But there's no comparison for having someone tell you exactly where you tend to go wrong, and giving you hints for how to get it right next time.

Thank you,

Mi estas malrapide lernanta Esperanto

I am slowly (Non-rapidly) learning Esperanto.

I think I did that correctly.

You got that almost correct. Esperanto is the object of "lernanta", so it should be "Mi estas malrapide lernanta Esperanton."

However, you'll notice that in Esperanto, we prefer to use simple tenses rather than complex ones. Even though your meaning is "I am slowly learning Esperanto", in Esperanto we are most likely to say it as "Mi malrapide lernas Esperanton" (literally, I slowly learn Esperanto)

The -as ending is not just a simple "learn" but also "is learning", "am learning", "have been learning", etc. We can express all of these complex tenses, but we generally choose not to. You'll notice this yourself, as you read Esperanto texts! We have a lot of -ings in English, but not too many -antas in Esperanto.

I still much to learn, but the point of life is to learn and grow ridulo.gif

I am still very much converting my English into Esperanto, and not thinking Esperanto. It will come in time and with practice.

Saluton kaj bonvenon, Zedwardson.

I started a couple of years ago, and still have a lot to learn, but I find the study of Esperanto very rewarding. I'm sure you will too. sal.gif

And if you want to hear spoken Esperanto often, try Muzaiko, a 24-hour radio station, or Varsovia Vento, a large podcast archive.

Not to forget filmoj.net.

It's really important, I think, to have someone that you can meet and practice Esperanto with. I'd suggest going to the Esperanto-USA website and see if there's already interested people around.
