Do you need to be able to type the hats on your keyboard, or does it recognise the x system?

I mentioned in an earlier post, if you're unable to type with diacritics, simply type the word without the diacritic.

For example, instead of ŝipo, just type sipo and make a mental note that memrise (or maybe your keyboard) is a bit silly.

The x system doesn't work, no. I suspect there's probably something they could do for Esperanto specifically, but it would probably be a bit too much work for them. Especially since the site definitely wasn't set up just for Esperanto.

You can create a new account without any of them. openID/Google would be good though.

At some point they'll need to address the differences between languages and the keyboards. If I want to learn german, I shouldn't need to get a german keyboard to create an umlaut. Overall a nice site.

Yeah - I'm trying to reduce the number of on-line memberships I have. Over the years I've collected loads of forum memberships, bug tracking memberships and mailing list memberships, mainly to do with open source software, and it's really just become too much. In fact I nearly didn't join lernu.net for the same reason!

Sorry - missed the earlier comment. In a sense the x system always works & the vocab should be entered & read in the x system form.

There is a greasemonkey script that will convert x notation when used in text fields. I've just tested it in memrise and it works fine.

The script is called Supersignoj Esperantaj.
Just install it after installing the greasemonkey addon for FireFox.

All they really need are some javascript tricks I guess.. But for german that could be a trap since the common non-umlaut notation of say "ue" for "ü" won't work with "sauer"....

Great website, watch for errors with esperanto spelling. well worth the price of admission.

I've just been having a go with this site and it really is good. I've been doing the French course. Ok, some of the vocab was a bit random for a beginner's level, but who cares! Generally it's been very good so far.

That's the only iffy thing - the quality depends a lot on how well the wordlists have been compiled. As it's open to anyone, and there's nobody editing it all, then there might be some dodgy courses out there. But, if you come across a bad course, you can just drop it and try another one. Otherwise, you can create your own.

The main strength of the website is the programme itself - the nice combination of word intro, pronunciation help, multichoice to help you get used to the words, repetition of old words, and then the typing section. And watering those plants is bizarrely motivating! rideto.gif
