Just wanted to share a website that has appeared lately. Long story short: It focuses on teaching vocabulary (in almost any language) based on cognitive science and is approached as a game.

Since Esperanto is so easy to learn, the only real hurdle being acquiring vocabulary, this seems like a great tool for introducing and teaching people about Esperanto.

Nice site, how much is user generated content? I'm seeing errors or things written in ways that probably shouldn't be written so, and inconsistencies between the descriptions of languages.

E.g. "Mandarin Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world" (should probably be "most spoken language in the world", the "widely" part is very debatable although Chinese is in the running for that still).

Compared to Spanish's descrption:
"100+ Most Common Words in Spanish, 1000+ Most Used Spanish Words, 200 Most Used..." etc. (total words down the bottom shows 22,078 words so it seems the description is just a rough summary of the content behind the link).

Despite this lack of clarity, looks promising!
Maybe I'll finally get around to learning some Lojban okulumo.gif

EDIT:
After using it, it's pretty damn fun! I like the point system and how it makes you almost want to learn words well so your "plants" that represent them grow well... At least I assume they "grow" okulumo.gif

I've made a few wordlists there in the Esperanto (there's one there for the first lernu.net exam, actually) and Toki Pona sections. I really do like using the site. The growing plants system is a nice idea, I just wish you could customise how frequently the words need to be retested.

Also, sometimes the site is a bit dodgy with Esperanto diacritics, so if you can't get it working for them just use the version of the letter without the diacritic. I doubt there's a way for it to accept x or other notation.

Why can't you just use the x system?

I did notice though that for Lojban definitions, the definition sometimes wasn't complete and presumably didn't fit on the "card".

That's probably because Lojban definitions often need something like "X1 does XYZ to X2 by means of X3 in manner X4"
(e.g. tavla: x1 speaks to x2 about x3 in language x4, which gets very long since it describes an entire sentence, e.g. using all those "slots" you can have "mi tavla mu lo prenu la cidjrkari la glibau" = I speak to 5 people each about curry in English)

Regardless, it could prove problematic if it is indeed a bug and might affect Esperanto definitions that need to be long.

I just spent fifteen minutes on it, and it does seem very fun, especially for just drilling vocabulary.

But should I be worried about its accuracy? I don't know enough Esperanto to judge how much of it is correct.

I wouldn't worry too much - it's better to learn many words inaccurately and then learn how they're meant to be than not learn words at all okulumo.gif (worst case scenario that is, I haven't tested the EO section of the site)

How much of it requires flash? I just did a demo, and everything seemed to work except for some big blanks that were flash.

I have a flash blocker up at the moment and it still worked for me without having to activate anything. It could be HTML 5.0 or Javascript not being allowed depending on what device you're using.

The website is amazignly useful! I signed up, and I learnt 102 new words in 1 hour. Then they ask you after 3 hours to harvest your words, that is to say, they test you again to see if you the words have passed to the long term memory, at certain times they ask you again so that you don't forget.

Thank you for the website!

Sadly the Ukrainian part has so few words :S I wish someone made a big list. It's really useful.

I wish you could sign-in with openID, there's no way I'll ever be on Facebook!
