Hello, I'm new here. Although I'm nowhere near ready yet, I was wondering if anybody knew where to find an online translation of The Hobbit into Esperanto. I've heard about a tangible edition, but an online one would be more convenient for me. Thank you.

You mean a pirate version? Shame on you.

That's not necessarily meant. Online versions can be legal and even non free. Also, there is no need to cut down trees.

You can at least find some sample chapters of the Hobbit & Lord of the Rings at

My understanding is that The Hobbit is not available in full in an Esperanto electronic version.

From rumours I have heard, it is also very probable that the print version of The Hobbit did not secure the necessary permissions for publishing a translation. It was published in Russia, as I recall, where controls on such things are lax.

I was able to get the print version from the esperanto association of britain's website. But I've not seen an electronic copy!

Exactly what I was trying to say.

I know that Lord of the Rings was in print in its entirety several years back--but no idea if that's still the case.

Not to hijack the thread, but (as someone whose primary interest in Esperanto is reading, rather than speaking) isn't the Esperanto movement missing out on some great opportunities here? There has to be at least one e-book platform (iPad, Kindle, Nook, etc) that would be willing to help convert Esperanto-language books (translations and original works both) into digital formats. Or is there another issue here of which I am unaware? I've taken some of the Eo books on Gutenberg, and read them side-by-side with the English versions, and found it to be a good learning aid.

I gather there is a translation by William Auld , but it is now out of print.

EDIT: Both Hobbit & LOTR are still being offered for sale on the British Esperanto Association website in print form.

The thing is I'm not very stable in my location at the moment. Today I'm in China, next week I'll be in the UK. If I purchase a book online, I'd probably be gone before it could get to me.
