Hi all, just wondering if i could get some clarification on some translations from English>Esperanto as i want to get them tattood and a slight mis-spelling or error in grammer would be really annoying.

'Today is a good day to die'
Hodiaŭ estas bona tago por morti

'You taught me how to question so i will always be free'
Vi instruis min kiel kontesti do mi eterne estas libero

'No longer to be confined by society i will walk the earth until enlightened'
Ne longe estas limigi per socio mi piediros la tero ĝis klera

To add a little discussion, does anyone else here have tattoo(s)? And any with Esperanto writing? Would be interesting to see pictures if you got them.

There are a few errors in your sentences, and I'd recommend postponing the tattooing until you at least can spot them yourself ridulo.gif How can you be sure that you will remain enthusiastic about something you evidently don't know yet very well...

I don't know anyone with tattoos IN Esperanto, but Arono from Radio Verda has a small green star tattooed on his arm.

For the record, I would never get a tattoo myself, but even though my Esperanto is excellent if I *were* to want to get a tattoo, I would certainly have someone else do a check on the grammar, just to be sure that I truly didn't miss anything.

Your first sentence looks fine to me. I'd render the others as:

'You taught me how to question so i will always be free'
Vi instruis min kiel demandi do mi ĉiam liberos

'No longer to be confined by society i will walk the earth until enlightened'
Ne plu limigota de societo, mi piediros la teron ĝis kleriĝo.

You could also put that last one as "limigita" or "limigata", depending on the exact shade of meaning you'd like to get.

limigota = going to be limited (future)
limigita = having been limited (past)
limigata = being limited (present)

It seems that there is at least one such person! lango.gif

I suppose 'societo' is not a very good translation in this case. Would 'socio' not be better?

The trouble with the tattoos is that they are typically permanent.

As you grow older your outlook on life is likely to change, however impossible that might seem now.

Take a tip from an old codger, don't do it!

Or, if you feel you must sport a tatto, get one that you can wash off.

Better still, and probably cheaper, have your maxims printed on a tee-shirt.

Darkmaster127:'No longer to be confined by society i will walk the earth until enlightened'
I might put this Ne plu partoprenonta en socio, mi vagados la teron ĝis mi iluminiĝos.

But why not keep your options open, by means of a temporary tattoo? An example is a washable tattoo.

I see another problem with the text that is not grammatical. It reminds me of a saying that went something like "Do not travel in jungles alone, for it is dangerous".

Darkmaster127:1.'Today is a good day to die'.

2.'You taught me how to question so i will always be free'

3.'No longer to be confined by society i will walk the earth until enlightened.
1. Ĉu vi povas rekomendi bonan psikiatron?

2. Mi neniam plu kredos je Vikipedio.

3. Mi ne loĝos en fiksa domo nek dungiĝos, sed tra-migros la mondon per la Pasporta Servo (ĝis mi saĝiĝos).

Nice translation there, Sudanglo rideto.gif

Yes, you seem to be right.

According to Wells:
soci/o = society (in general), the community
soci/a = social

societ/o = society (organization/association)
societ/ema = sociable
So, 'societo' is some kind of grouping of people within society (socio) as a whole. And if you tend to like joining such groups, then you are 'societema' (sociable).
