I'd just got back from my afternoon walk and flicked the radio on to listen to Material World.

Imagine my surprise to hear the presenter greet his audience with 'Saluton'. Or was that some sort of auditory hallucination? Anybody else hear that?.

Of course, Dec 15th is Esperanto Day, but there was no mention of this later in the programme, nor any other explanation given as to why the presenter should have welcomed the several million Radio 4 listeners in Esperanto.

Do we have a closet Esperantist at the BBC?

It would be nice if Saluton! became as chic and commonplace as "Okay, ja!" rido.gif

I can not answer your question. But maybe that could be interesting, too: 152nd anniversary of the birth of Ludwig Zamenhof (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland).

Yes, it's there! "Saluton!" occurs loud and clear about 56 seconds into the podcast at the beginning of the program Material World, for 15th December 2011, presented by Quentin Cooper.

Its presented by Quentin Cooper. | Quentin Cooper en.wikipedia.org . Maybe its possible to contact him via linkedin.com .

Its somewhat disappointing that BBCPolska.com didn't mention LLZ birth. At least I can not find something using Google search "Esperanto" site:bbcpolska.com and "Zamenhof" site:bbcpolska.com . Direct websites search facilities of bbcpolska.com doesn't seem to work.

Maybe the page/podcast was changed but all I get at 56 seconds is some talk about the Higgs boson. I can't seem to find a poscast by a Martin Redfern either?
