I agree. But some people prefer to have a keyboard layout, so it's still worth the trouble to create the layouts, because there is clearly demand for them.
I don't know of a programme such as Tajpi or Ek! that works on Apple Mac computers, so this is why the Esperanto layouts are kind of handy. Unless, of course, someone can point me to such a programme?!

In the case of Windows, then yes, perhaps Tajpi solves the whole problem in one swoop, which is great.

To be honest, I don't really know how Tajpi works, as I don't have a Windows computer. Is it something similar to iBus on Linux, only that it's specifically for Esperanto?

In a sense yes, but I'd be hesitant to compare Tajpi to IBus. They are significantly different in a number of ways.

Tajpi is Esperanto-only by default but you could use it to enter symbols from other character sets by way of the scripting feature. There's also support for automatic transliteration from Esperanto to cirrilic.

Has anyone tried using this for Microsoft computers: The Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator?. It seems to be something similar to the Ukelele programme that I'm using on the Mac.

Very good. I had a look at this programme on the computer at work today. Some of the terminology is a bit different to that in Ukelele, which confused me a bit. Still, it seems pretty much the same kind of thing. I wonder if there's also a programme like this for Linux computers? - the GUI makes life a lot easier.

The "Canadian Multilingual Standard" keyboard layout is built into Windows computers and you can easily type the Esperanto keys by using the circumflex dead key. However, there are a million other special characters and some keys are moved from the normal QWERTY layout.

Sorry to "bump" this thread after it had seemingly gone to sleep for a while, but I wondered if anybody knows how to type the special characters on an iPad. I have managed to set my computer, my laptop and my phone up so I can type in Esperanto (even though I don't yet know any Esperanto speakers well enough to be sending them text messages), but can't seem to get my iPad to type them.

Any ideas?

Look for the free "Ĝusta Klavaro" app in iTunes. You will have to type your text into that app (it doesn't replace the keyboards across the system), but you can then copy and paste the text into other apps.

Wait... I thought it was one of the benefits of tablet-computers, that you can use any keyboard you want, since there are no material keys and it all becomes a matter of software.
Don't tell me, that it ain't possible to add keyboard-layouts on an iPad...

Well, yes, it's a "virtual" keyboard, and I can choose from a wide variety of keyboard layouts, and have done for other languages, but Esperanto is not one of the choices given.
