In the latest copy of Update the quarterly bilingual organ of the British Esperanto Association (EAB), there were a couple of reports that caught my eye.

The first was an account of a young British Esperantist's participation in an Andaluzia Esperanto-Kongreso in Spain where he neniam antaŭe vidis tiom da eternaj komencantoj en unu loko.

The second was in the calendar of Events, where intriguingly listed was a Krokodila Renkontiĝo 2012 - kvar tagoj de umado en Pirinea montara vilaĝo.

This surely is the ultimate in Esperanto tolerance. An Esperanto congress for Krokodilantoj. I find myself strangely attracted by the idea of attending. Sounds fun!

There should be more such events. Pure Genius!

A fabulous way to hone ones skills in the local language whilst enjoying the warm glow of the company of 'samideanoj'

I would wonder instead why 'the best' simple impartial international language which Esperanto place itself as, can have these 'crocodiles' and 'eternal beginners', at all. I can remember a saying, "To have pride in one's ulcers," or whichever its English equivalent is.

Esperanto doesn't place itself anywhere since it is only a language, not a living being. It is some users of esperanto that think that way - and you are among them too, if you emphasise its role. For me esperanto is just an easy yet powerful language for all who want to use it.

Even the simplest task can have an eternal beginner. There are always people who don't want to put in the effort to do something properly.

Krokodili is a sort of Esperantist faux pas, Igg. That's what makes the Krokodila Kongreso such a bewitching idea.

Why is there no Universala Krokodila Asocio? I would gladly pay my subscription, for the sheer joyous surrealistic naughtiness of the concept.

Also, in principle IGG, la eterna komencanto is a legitimate, even perhaps worthy role.

After all, you may well support the concept of Esperanto but not want the bother of actually trying to master the language.

If only we had 50 million eternaj komencantoj, we could vote our own people into parliament and get the changes we want in the educational system.

I am an "eterna komencanto" in Mandarin! Dang! It is so hard for me to wrap my head around that language and I have been making that attempt for about 40 years, now. And I have met my share of "eternaj komencantoj" of American (English).
