Vestitor:This would be more evident should the day arrive when Lernu received a legal threat because someone - unwittingly or otherwise - linked to a website (perhaps t a download) and 'infringed upon copyright'.That's a very fair point, and although lernu is not a website that takes a stand on any political issues, I am personally against SOPA/PIPA.
However there are useful ways to oppose a law and ways that aren't useful. lernu's participation or non-participation in the strike is not likely to change anything whatsoever, given our international user base (and also given the fact that our user base is miniscule compared to that of sites like Wikipedia or Wordpress).
It's not like sites who participate in the strike get an an automatic "get out of jail free card" if they ever get in legal trouble. Whether lernu participates in the strike or not, it would change nothing for us if and when we ever had legal problems stemming from that law.
As a much smaller site than Wikipedia, we have a lot more control over what gets uploaded to our site. The only place where our users can really upload anything is in the forums, where they can post a file or a link. It's not like we're a torrent site with hundreds of thousands of users uploading stuff willy nilly, with no possibility for us to look over it.
And since we're a relatively small site (in the grand scheme of things) it's easy for us to remove copyrighted content as we hear about it, and to delete the accounts of users who have disobeyed our terms of service (which expressly prohibit use of copyrighted content without permission, outside of fair use).

In a very cynical way (and this really doesn't need to be pointed out to me), I am delighted to see that U.S. netizens now also get to feel the pressure. Either SOPA fails and creates a precedent, or it succeeds and paves the way for a wide user base for future independent networks, such as mesh networks or darknets. I hope for the former, but still believe that the world as a whole has a strong need for the latter.

Vilius:Then let's immediately shut down the website. THAT will teach them a lesson

(Seems that ESF doesn’t actually run lernu!, sorry for the misinformation in my last posting.)

darkweasel:And concerning the jurisdiction lernu! is subject to, a whois query outputs an address in Slovakia.Yet geotaging of the IP address gives location somewhere around Frankfurt. I believe, the Whois tool gives the legal address (probably of E@I or some other organization), and geotaging gives physical address of the ISP. Either way it's outside US.

darkweasel:And concerning the jurisdiction lernu! is subject to, a whois query outputs an address in Slovakia. The ESF doesn't run lernu, but they provide most of our funding. Officially we are a project of E@I, Education@Internet, which is registered in Slovakia as a non-governmental youth organization. Possibly no longer "youth", we talked about changing that part, but I'm not sure if anyone actually did it.

lernu's servers are in Germany, as someone has already noted.

Maybe (but it's only an oursider's superficial view) there is only a few parameters to change to do that securely.

Altebrilas:Why not changing the appearance of the site? The background color, or a picture, or the coding of emoticons to make them appear sad or angry?Considering the current time of day (and the fact that this is supposed to be happening at the same time on the whole Internet), this proposal comes a bit late.

Altebrilas:Why not changing the appearance of the site? The background color, or a picture, or the coding of emoticons to make them appear sad or angry? We're not a US site, our site doesn't take standpoints on political issues, we are operated by a small team with better things to do, and as a multilingual site, we would have to put up enough translations of what's going on, so that our readers would be aware.
We have a lot of volunteer translators here but it isn't always possible to rustle up a good translation at the last minute - especially since this blackout was only widely announced yesterday. That's not much time at all.
Suffice it to say - no, it's not realistic, especially on short notice, even if we were so inclined.
