The EPub 2 format specifies UTF-8 encoding. Some old PDFs have ISO 8859-3 encoding, so I'd expect issues with those. My Nook Simple Touch has no issues with hatted Esperanto characters but some typographers dingbats are missing. So in making eBooks as EPub for Eldonejo Mistera Sturno I use PNG graphics instead of those. Otherwise, it's all good.
