Hi

I am looking at getting a Kobo ereader. The price is better than a kindle, but more importantly, you can read pdf's on it without converting, & I have Esperanto pdf's I want to use on it.

Does the Kobo show Esperanto accents?

I have no first-hand experience of e-readers, but this comparison website indicates that the "Kindle Fire" can handle pdfs.

i am looking at the basic ereaders, not kindle fire/ kobo touch etc.

The device I am interested in will recognise a pdf if it is directly copied to it without the need for management software etc, which is how I prefer to do things.

Is there anyone who has used a Kobo ereader that can help me please?

I googled around a little and it looks like you can get Esperanto accents on Kobo, but it will take you some fiddling with your Kobo, and with the files that you input into your Kobo, to do it. This discussion thread discusses how to do it.

Bottom line - it's doable but it depends on how much effort you want to devote to it.

PDF file format embeds the used fonts, so PDF rendering is the same on any device.

No, it is not. My mobile does not show esperanto characters at all and it is "any" device.

Not all PDFs embed fonts anyway. It depends on which options you select when you create your PDF.

I took the plunge & bought one - the cheapest. (£69.99) 'Wireless e-reader'

I copied over La Tuta Esperanto pdf from lernu & the accents show fine (I just copied from my hard drive to the reader - no software needed for my Linux netbook). Zooming pdf's mean they disappear off the side of the screen.

I used the free program Calibre to reformat LTE & Gerda Malaperis to epub. Accents appear fine & now when you zoom the text, it re-formats to fit the page.

Just to add that Esperanto only works with the 'Serif' Font. If you switch to 'Sans-serif' letters are replaced by question marks etc.

I use Kobo for reading Epub in Esperanto and it works fine. But only with some fonts the accents are displayed.

I converted the dictionary ReVo to use in Kobo. This is the thread about it.
