I have a question about writing out dates, specifically in correspondence.

Usually, if I'm writing a letter, I'll write out the date in this way:

Friday, January 6, 2012

If I'm writing the same thing out in Esperanto, I know basically what to write, but I'm not sure which, if any, of the words need the accusative -n.

ĵaŭdo(n), la 6-a(n) de januaro(n), 2012

Is the -n needed at all here? Why or why not?
The accusative hasn't tripped me up that much yet - except for this!

Thanks, everyone rideto.gif

Januaro doesn’t get an -n since it’s preceded by de.

Otherwise, I don’t know which one is better (though you could just write 2012-01-06).

PMEG suggests "vendredon, la 6-an de januaro"

(ĵaŭdo = Thursday, vendredo = Friday)

Personally I normally would write "6 jan. 2012"

You didn't ask about this but watch out for numbers-only dates. They are discouraged in Esperanto because of the possibility of misunderstanding, but you should be aware that there are different customs in this regard.

2012-1-6 is clear to everyone. But 1/6/2012 would be understood by Americans as January 6th, and by most of the rest of the world as June 1st.

Which is why ISO 8601 format (2012-01-22) is preferable when you want to use a numbers-only date.

Whoops - I'd been thinking about the date question so much that I can't even remember how to read a calendar! rido.gif

Thanks for the answers, everyone. I was aware of the posibility of misunderstanding with numeral-only dates, but I've always written out dates - habit, I suppose.
