Why do....

Sudanglo, it may even be that AVG has something to do with the excessive processor time on those pages, if AVG is trying to do some kind of security check of the page's contents.

I spoke with Jev about your problem and he pointed out that the Esperanto forums, unlike the English ones, have 'clickable' words (click and get a translation). That might have something to do with your problem. Since we haven't heard about this problem from any of our other users, I suspect this has something to do with your particular system setup - maybe the IE8 + AVG combination, plus the way you have your settings.

The first time I opened up Chrome, my first thought was "Where did all my buttons and functions go?". My screen looked empty and a little naked; with IE and Firefox, I was used to having a hundred menus and buttons all over the place.

But IE8 and Firefox have taken a page from Chrome's book, and they are now much more cleanly designed, like Chrome. So I think the mental effort involved in switching is much less than it was when I switched. You can see a picture of how Chrome looks).

It took me a day or two to get used to it when I switched. One of the main differences is that the address field also acts like a Google search, so you can either type in an address, OR you can type in some Google search terms. That was probably the thing that threw me off the most, I kept forgetting that I didn't need a separate Google search field, and didn't need to specially visit google.com to do a search.

If you prefer Bing, I believe you can set Chrome to do a Bing search with that search bar.

Each Chrome tab is a separate process, so if one crashes, your whole browser doesn't crash, you can close just the one tab, leaving the rest of your tabs untouched. However if you have a zillion tabs open, it can slow down your system somewhat. It's not a problem for me, even though my primary computer is a three year old netbook -- not exactly a computing powerhouse!

Install Chrome, try it out - and if you don't like it, no problem, just uninstall it and get rid of it. It's no big deal.

IE = Is Evil

That is final for me. I have switched to FF (= Far Forward) and all of my web problems are gone at last.

sudanglo:Further detail that I can add on the problem I have encountered, is that whilst visiting the Questions (Esperanto) section of the Forums, my AVG Internet Security (version 12) popped up a report that Explorer was using an unusual amount of memory and recommended closing and reopening.

I never seem to have problems at other sites, nor in the English section of the Forums.
I also use AVG (paid version, not the free one) and have on rare occasions experienced the same popup while using Opera, so it may not be an Internet Explorer issue as such. (I don't honestly recall which specific pages or sites with which I got the popup.) However, even after the warning, I continued motoring on until it was convenient for me to do something else.

sudanglo:What happens to all my favourites?
I believe when going through the installation process, it asks if you want to import from IE.
I also second trying Chrome, it's very fast. Firefox is also an option if you want to explore other options, and I believe has an Esperanto version. I prefer Chrome though...

I agree, I am in the prcess of switching to Chrome and it does seem to be a bit faster.

The problem doesn't seem to be related to AVG, Erinja - task-manager shows Iexplorer.exe grabbing all the processor capacity.

And it only happens on visiting the Esperanto section of the Forums. It happened twice this morning, when visiting Viewpoints and Questions. But the lock-up doesn't always occur.

No problems at all, however, when in the English language forum.

I have noticed that Fire Fox has some errors - when displaying long pages with bacground image, this background disappears after a few screen-fulls when I move down the page. I hope they will fix it. IE and Opera work fine on those pages. Whatever... I am not going back to IE!

And as for the Antivirus soft - I use Kaspersky Lab and I am very pleased with it. AVG caused me a lot of trouble.

Sudanglo, if AVG has some kind of presence within the browser (like a safe internet toolbar or something), then AVG activity could still show up as IE causing the processor load. But if you don't have anything like that, then it's probably the clickable words causing a problem with IE. Switching to another browser should clear up your problem. Maybe you could post a message in the Esperanto forums to see if anyone else has had this problem, but I read all of the comments that come into the site, and as I said, this is the first I've heard of such a problem.

On the virus front, I used to use AVG, and then one time it didn't catch a virus on a family member's computer, and we switched to Avira, which did catch it and clean it up. So I switched to Avira for a couple of years, which throws up an annoying pop-up window about twice a day (if you use the free version).

Recently a computer professional I trust suggested to me Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft's own free virus scanner, which he said runs much more "lightly" on Windows systems, so I recently installed it on my new computer. Running fine so far but I very seldom have problems with viruses anyway, since I generally stick to very "clean" parts of the internet (newspaper websites, etc).

Maybe the lernu! team could consider installing an option for more experienced speakers to deactivate the "clickable words" feature in the forum (which often causes me to accidentally click a word and then get an annoying pop-up with some trivial word like de). Not a very urgent matter, but it would be useful.

Just switch off Javascript in your browser, that should do. Anyway, I find it annoying too.
