Does anyone know if there is an active Esperanto group around Bristol?

I am currently in interviews for a job with Dyson. No offer yet, but it's enough of a possibility that I'm starting to think about logistics. Bristol is the nearest city of any size to Dyson, which is in the middle of nowhere. I'm finding the idea of moving to a city where I don't know anyone a bit daunting; it's also nowhere near my relatives, all in the North. It would help a lot if I could get in contact with some local Esperantists to ask them some questions and not feel quite so isolated when I arrive.

According to Wikipedia there are umpteen places in the world called Bristol, including 20+ in the States

Is this Bristol in the UK, Erinja?

I think I might be able to help, if so.

Bristol, UK.

Sorry, I was assuming the mention of Dyson would make it clear, but obviously not!

I live in Exeter for university, which is about 2 hours away or so.

I don't know of any groups here, but I've only just begun learning myself.

You should contact Timtim, Erinja. He is on the EAB management committee and has many contacts. He is also a very helpful sort of guy.

I half recall that JEB (the youth section of EAB) held an event in Bristol not so long ago and there were participants from the City.

I assume you tried a search of the Lernu registrants and came up with nothing for Bristol.

Britain is a very small island, Bristol is only 2hrs or so away from London by train.

Nowhere in the South of the UK is really in the middle of nowhere - except in the extreme south-west - at least, not in the way places in the US can be in the middle of nowhere.

A Net search says that Dyson UK headquarters are in the Cotswolds - a lovely part of the country - and not too far from Oxford (I used to drive out there in my student days)

I'm pretty sure, that I read that efforts were being made to re-establish the Oxford group. Certainly the Cambridge group has come to life - there was an article with photo's about them in issue 56 of UPDATE (the bi-lingual organ of EAB).

Dyson himself is often on TV, here. I get the impression he would be a good guy to work for.

I just tried searching the Lernu registrants, and came up with more than a page using Bristol, and almost a page using nearby Bath

I have no doubt it's in a lovely part of the country. However, 2 hours by train is not really close enough for an evening out; if I wanted to attend a meeting of one of the London Esperanto clubs, for example, it would be out of the question on a weeknight.

The problem with using lernu registrants is that they are mainly beginners, and a search turns up not only people actively involved, but also people who thought Esperanto sounded interesting for five minutes, set up an account, then left and lost interest. That's why I wanted to know if anyone had personal contacts. Based on a search of lernu users, it looks like there are three people in Bristol who have spent a fair bit of time on the site. One in Bath. The EAB lists a Bristol club, but no website; I know how these things go, I know that online vestiges of a club last longer than clubs themselves. Local knowledge is important! I suppose I should contact the three active Bristolians on lernu, if it comes down to getting over there for an interview or a job.

I am told by Dyson employees that they have to pitch ideas to James Dyson about every month or so, and it's like being on Dragon's Den. Not quite as mild-mannered seeming as on the advertisements!

Hello!

I'm afraid I'm not going to be very helpful, seeing as I'm not in England at the moment, but I'm from Bristol. I believe I tried to find out about a Bristol Esperanto club online, but I learnt that it had mostly disbanded, with the remaining members unfortunately being a bit too old to meet up regularly.

I spend most of my time up north, though, with university (I know of a few other Esperantists who live or lived in the north), so I'm only in Bristol for a few months in the summer. Good luck with your search, I hope you can find fellow Esperantists in and around Bristol!

Someone e-mailed me with Veronika's contact info, so I'll definitely contact her if it starts looking like I'm going to be coming over there. I have a couple of other job possibilities in the works, so we'll see what pans out. I had an interview yesterday for a job as a US Patent examiner, which would be very cool if it works out.

How convenient is it to travel between Cardiff and Bristol? It looks like there's some inconvenient water in the way.

40 minutes on the train, Erinja. Or you can drive over the Severn Bridge (see Wikipedia).

But I don't uderstand why you would want to live in Bristol and commute to the Cotswolds for work. I can't seeing bombing up and down the M4 everday as much fun.
