chrisim101010:Does anyone know how to set up Ubuntu 11.10 to use the x system for typing special characters? I found the Esperanto layout, and a setting to use some key that i don't have, but i can't find a setting or program to implement X. Any idea's?
I think there's a program called SCIM that you can use to implement the x-system on Linux systems. I don't know if it would work with your specific Ubuntu installation.

Oh, and the true 'x' system still does not work. I am not sure why they implemented other exotic ways (there is even an implementation for Dvorak!) but not the stock standard 'x' system. Perhaps it's a conspiracy! They didn't want me spelling it "Linuxx", or even worse, "Linŭ"! Perhaps i could convince them to spell it "Linuks" for more universal appeal, and to end this conspiracy! lango.gif

Surely i can't be the only one who wishes to write Esperanto in Linuks with a Colemac keyboard!........ Well perhaps it is a bit of a niche market product, but still. malgajo.gif

Because noone care about Esperanto enough to include x-system in default tables for popular IMEs (the way decribed was for deprecated IME, and additionaly that table was not in standard distribution). Who are to blame? Definitely esperantist themselves.

Well, the x-typing-system was first used because something like Unicode didn't exist. Now that we have it, the system is a little bit out of date, since there are plenty of ways to type the letters more or less directly.

It's your business, if you prefer it, but I'd recommend to use another system like using deadkeys or the compose-key, adding new combinations (whichever you like), using the existing combinations, etc.

The keyboard has no suitable dead keys in convenient location. As modified letters are numerous in Esperanto, the use of some distant key as dead, or which worse, helding down the small AltGr key, or the worst case of using 3 keys for 1 character by using compose is not appropriate, as it distracts the user from text input.

A little bit, yes. Personally i prefer using a Mod-Key (AltGr in my case), which doesn't really hurt my typing-flow, like writing capital letters using Shift also doesn't. OK: Capital diacritic letters are a little bit annoying and honestly i'd prefer an alphabet with simple letters only, but since this ain't my decission, i arrange with the current situation.

PS: To all, that think "Urgh! Now he fed the troll again!": Igg's got a point here, whether you like it or not.

We already (sort of) have a page for explaining how to type in Esperanto; the main problem is that it's a bit out of date.

The main problem with providing lists of links is that it takes effort to keep them updated. Technologies change, methods change, links disappear, and suddenly you wake up one day and your links page is useless.
