Ubuntu has the ability to install the Esperanto keyboard layout. There is an easy layout switcher applet that can be added to the panel. It changes the keyboard around though so you have to learn to type blind the new layout. This is not a big problem as you think. I learned to type the Dvorak layout blind, due to lack of Dvorak ready keyboards, and it is much more complicated.

This is the layout I use when I type in Esperanto. Mi ŝatas ĝin!

It is a problem for people unfamiliar with qwerty keyboards. The Esperanto keyboard layout is qwerty-based, so the special characters reside on the places where they do on qwerty keyboards, which makes it very much unusable to me as I have no idea where to find symbols like {} there.

However, for users who use qwerty anyway this is not a problem.

I don't think there is a standard location for {} in QWERTY keyboards.

Well, it was just an example. Even when trying to type ".", I always need to test out a lot of keys until I finally find it.

I do use Dvorak on a Qwerty keyboard, and the symbols you mention {} are now located on the minus/plus/equals keys. And for Dvorak ironically the + sign is now where the } sign is. So they changed places completely. Dvorak mutilates Qwerty. I learned it by putting tiny little stickers on each of the keys. I left the original letters exposed and I have a script that changes between Qwerty and Dvorak whenever I press F2. So if a friend comes over, they know that pressing F2 changes it back to Qwerty. After buying a few new keyboards, I simply remembered the Dvorak layout rather than implement stickers.

Esperanto Keyboard Stickers

This site pretends to have them:

Of course there is something else you can do cheaper. Buy some sticker sheets for your printer and print out the Esperanto keyboard layout. Only it is tedious to cut out each letter. I have done this.

Does anyone know how to set up Ubuntu 11.10 to use the x system for typing special characters? I found the Esperanto layout, and a setting to use some key that i don't have, but i can't find a setting or program to implement X. Any idea's?
I use Esperantilo, which is a windows/ linux text editor for Esperanto. This converts x-system to hats. It has spell & grammar check.

For linux you have to copy the bin file & evortaro.zip to the same directory, make sure the bin is executable & run.

esperantilo downloads

I have got it running on a keypen with both the linux & windows binaries in the same directory so it can run on either.
This is a solid text editor. I have been playing with it under Linux. I merely moved it to the "bin" directory and did a "chmod +x" on it. It is good, as it is a bin file that needs no installation, just permission changes.

Hi

I configured Ubuntu to use the Compose key to type not only Esperanto diacritics, but also those in French, Italian, Breton and other symbols.

I have already described how to do this in the forum:

Saluton

Mi agordis la "COMPOSE" klavon per Ubuntu por tajpi ne nu la Esperantajn supersignojn, sed ankaŭ la francajn, la italajn, la bretonajn kaj aliajn signojn. Mi jam priskribis tion tie:

It worked on my Ubuntu laptop and my Slackware Desktop, though personally I find typing ^ to be tedious. Interesting key though, to keep in mind. I found this list of its entire sequences:

Thanks all for the suggestions. i have settled for the compose key solution. I have also found Esperantilo to be very interesting.
Unfortunately, my stubbornness prevails. I still like the X system. senkulpa.gif Primarily because of confusing key combinations with the Colemak keyboard system. I will be hoping that Ubuntu becomes more customizable soon. Fortunately, i still have tajpi and windows rideto.gif
