I have come across two websites with recordings of the voice of Zamenhof himself, speaking at Barcelona in 1909. Amazing listening to the creator of Esperanto himself from nearly a hundred years ago:

That is pretty whacky -- but I'm glad I don't have to learn from such old recordings!

Haha, awesome to see these have lasted almost 100 years!

I have to be honest: I wasn’t very impressed by that voice recording of Zamenhof. Perhaps he was a better speaker than a reader, or maybe the language has evolved to a higher degree and I just got used to a more natural, flexible and fluid Eperanto. Nevertheless instead of diminishing my appreciation of the language, this not very impressive recording gives me an idea of the power of the esperantist community to develop a real living language.

Thanks for this. This is very interesting. As for the quality of Zamenof's speaking, I think there are two things worth remembering. One, he seems to be reading rather than speaking extemporaneously, which affects the rhythm of the speech. Also, He was speaking at a time when Esperanto was still relatively new. Perhaps many in his audience had never heard esperanto spoken before (having learned it from books and pamplets). That would probably make him want to speak slowly, with clear enunciation of individual words.
