I was following the discussion at the Economist about which language to learn and noticed that someone had posted in Esperanto and another poster had translated the post for the benefit of English readers.

So I though I would pop the post in Esperanto into Google Translate and see how the result compared. Not bad at all, I think.

Original text in Esperanto:

Google Translate's version:
I'm not sure that I understand this English-language text. If I understand, the author writes that the computers will kill Esperanto. It is curious that I have completely opposite impression. And especially the global computer network seems a done just for Esperanto. I do not tend to predictions, however, the current reality of Esperanto as a window to the world more than compensate for the relatively small effort to learn it, at least in comparison with other languages.

Human translator's version:
I am not sure I have a good understanding of that English text. If I understand it clearly, the author writes that computers are going to kill Esperanto. It's odd, I have quite the opposite impression. And especially the worldwide computer Web seems precisely made *for* Esperanto. I'm not at all given to predictions, however the present reality of Esperanto as a window on the whole world more than compensates for the relatively small effort needed to learn it, at least compared with other languages.

Maybe, it's because Esperanto is easier to translate by computers than other languages. It's another reason why to use Esperanto.

I'd say that Google Translate really did quite well!

One interesting thing is how it always translated "bone kompreni" as a simple "to understand", rather than "to have a good understanding" or even "to understand well".

And it coped with the not much used 'h' convention and missing accents on 'ŭ'

When did google include Esperanto in its list of supported languages? I'd never noticed it before.

Domo, ora kato, mistera bato.
House, golden cat, a mysterious blow.

Yep, Not bad at all.

It was in late February if I remember correctly.
