Mi malsanis?

Hi everyone, I have been playing around with word roots a little today, for practice, and I came up with the term "Mi malsanis" for "I have been ill". Is this correct esperanto, or is it necessary to have the word "havi" in the sentence for correct grammar?

It's correct. You can also say "mi havis malsanon", but IMO that's less common.

Or "Mi estis malsana".

And if you have just been off colour, under the weather, you can use malsaneti.

Small point, if you have been ill and you haven't yet gotten over it, you'd use the present tense - "Mi malsanas dum la pasintaj tri tagoj" (I have been ill for the past three days [and am still ill now])

If you have now recovered, you'd use "Mi malsanis dum la pasintaj tri tagoj" (I was ill over the last three days [but am no longer ill now])

havis malanon is more like "had an illness".

Esperanto doesn't use forms of "have" to form verb tenses, so you don't need to worry about putting "have" into verb forms.

According to Teach yourself Esperanto (pages 93 and 158), for extending the past into the present, we can also use the present tense with de or jam de (jam is used to emphasize the connection with the past): Mi lernas Esperanton de ses monatoj "I have been learning Esperanto for six months", Mi estas malsana jam de tri tagoj, "I have been ill for three days (and still am)", Mi estas ĉi tie jam dum tri tagoj, "I've already been here for three days."
