Hello everybody!

How would you translate "happy to see you" in Esperanto? "Mi ĝojas pro vidi vin"?
I just wonder what is the better way to translate the pattern "(I'm) [adjective] to [verb]". Any comment would be greatly appreciated. ♪

Someone has said to me, "feliĉe ke mi ne interrompis vin." In my head I translated that as "I'm happy to not have interrupted you," but I didn't ask for an explanation so I could be wrong. Applying that to your case:

"Feliĉe ke mi vidis vin." = happy to have seen you?

Most people wouldn't bother with a preposition. Most people would leave it at "Mi ĝojas vidi vin"

This structure is used in Esperanto also.

Mi estas kontenta vidi vin.

I think you say Je suis content de vous voir in French, don't you?

Mi ĝojas vidi vin is bit more effusive.

HB the issue of whether it is OK to use pri or pro in front of the infinitive is disputed.

Hyperboreus:There is no basic translation of a given pattern. Look at each case seperatly and do not try to translate word by word. Often you will find a lot of possibilities to render the thought in the target language.
Yes, indeed, I did mean that I was searching for a good way to express the pattern of "happy to see you", "glad to hear that" and the like, but of course not something that would have applied to every sentence structure that would have fitted the given pattern, it would have been pretty unreasonable. ^^

And, yes, Sudanglo, you're perfecly right, we say « Je suis content de vous voir » in French. But, just like English does, you can also drop the verb and its subject, what gives the sentence « Content de vous voir » (as perfectly natural as the former). ♪

Oh, I've forgotten to respond to the following point:

Well, I don't know what PMEG says on this topic, but I can understand that "pro umi" (pro + infinitivo) sounds a bit odd, because an infinitive does not describe an actual event but the idea thereof, when "pro" introduce a cause, and thus an event which actually happens or happened.

In the other hand, I think that "pri umi" would theoretically be fine if and only if "umi" describes a conceptual event, something that doesn't or didn't actually happen, as in "mi pensas pri manĝi". But maybe is it preferable to use the noun form of the verb for such a purpose ("mi pensas pri manĝo")?
Anyway, in "mi ĝojas pri vidi vin", the "vidi" infinitive is intended to describe an actual event, so this use indeed is probably arguable.
Conversely, "mi ĝojas pri (tio) ke mi vidas vin" is surely fine, though rather long. rideto.gif

An interesting line of argument, Ilmen.

For the meaning of ones thoughts being directed to a certain fulfilment, as in I am thinking of eating in the town/ I am minded to eat in the town, I think one could say Mi pensas manĝi en la urbo.

But to refer to thinking about the activity of eating as the subject of ones thoughts, manĝado is better than manĝo, which often refers to a meal.

Ekde kiam mi komencis kun tiu dieto, mi ne povas ĉesi pensi pri manĝado.

However I am warming to the idea of ĉesi pensi pri manĝi here.
