I've translated, "However, from what I know about her," as "Tamen, de kio mi scias pri ŝi". This was slightly misunderstood, so I changed 'de' to 'laŭ', but I have also been advised to use 'per'. Any thoughts on how I can make this clearer?

By adding the accusative you forgot: laŭ kion mi scias pri ŝi.

(though 黄鸡蛋’s suggestions are still better)

The general feeling might well be that the most appropriate preposition is 'laŭ'.

However, personally I don't see that 'de' is totally unacceptable.

I would say for example Mi ĝin lernis de libro (I learnt it from a book) or Mi eksciis de mia patro.

Perhaps you were criticised not for using the preposition 'de', but for dropping the accusative.

It should be de kion mi scias pri ŝi (short for de tio, kion mi scias pri ŝi)

You might use miainforme, depending on the context.
