A little help on a sentence

Today I looked up 'amindumi' in the PIV, and one of the examples was: "mi loĝas ĉe la urbestro, amindumas senlime lian edzinon k filinon." I had to look up 'urbestro' [mayor], but after I did, I'm still not sure I understand this sentence. As best as I can tell, it says: "I live with the mayor, courting endlessly his wife and daughter." Is this right?

...and, because I really should practice 'skribas esperante':

Mi hodiaŭ serĉis 'amindumi' en la PIV, kaj iu ekzemplo estis: "mi loĝas ĉe la urbestro, amindumas senlime lian edzinon k filinon." Mi devis serĉi 'urbestro', sed post mi faris tion mi ankoraŭ dubas mian komprenon pri ĉi tiu frazo. Laŭ mia plej supozo ĝi signifas, ke la parolanto amindumas la edzinon kaj filinon de la urbestro. Ĉu ĉi tiu estas prava?

Dankon, kaj mi ĉiam bonvenas korektojn.

Woo and court, the translations in the Wells dictionary of amindumi, seem rather quaint to modern ears. (The quote in PIV may well have been taken from some Victorian text.)

PIV's definition of amindumi Peni plaĉi al iu persono, precipe pro seksaj celoj might be rendered more in tune with our times as trying to get off with or hitting on. Perhaps flirting might also be good here.

On the other hand to preserve the historical flavour, you might want to stick with courting.

Thanks for the reply. I think I get the meaning of amindumi, but wasn't sure about the example sentence. I think the construction with a comma and no linking word threw me for a loop, because I wasn't sure if the same rules that would apply in that situation in English applied in Esparnto. Also, why does the mayor let this guy hit on his family and still stay with them?! lango.gif

The more modern translation of "amindumi" would be "to date".

You date someone, you "amindumi".

(FYI, it's not "post mi faris tion" - it's "post kiam mi faris tion". If you say "post mi", it means something more like "behind me". When you follow "post" with a verb, you need "kiam" as a linking word. Similarly, when you follow "antaŭ" with a verb, you need "ol" as a linking word.)

"prava" means to have the right opinion. Only a person can be "prava". A fact can't have an opinion, so a fact can't be "prava"

A fact is "ĝusta" if it is right (as in the opposite of wrong)

So you'd say "Ĉu mi pravas?" or "Ĉu tio estas ĝusta?"

"plej supozo" doesn't make sense. Plej is an adverb, so it describes a verb or an adjective. You want to say, "laŭ mia plej bona supozo"

I'd like to ask about xdzt's sentence "Mi ĉiam bonvenas korektojn". Translated as "I always welcome corrections", it makes perfect sense, in English, that is. But Lernu's vortaro gives the definition of bonveni = to be welcome {which looks intransitive) and bonvenigi = to welcome (which is transitive). Am I missing something? Should the sentence be changed to something like "Bonvolu korekti iajn erarojn" or some other translation? Thanks.

He should have said "Mi ĉiam bonvenigas korektojn", I always make corrections welcome.

I forgot to mention that in my message.

He could also have said "Korektoj estas bonvenaj" (Corrections are welcome)

Of course, "Bonvolu korekti min" is also correct.

'to date' seems to me to imply certain sorts of activity like taking someone to the cinema or to dinner (with the idea of getting into a romantic relation).

I suppose that on an outing where the intentions of the gentleman are not clear, the girl might ask 'is this a date?' - Ĉu vi amindumas?

Whilst the chap may have been trying to strike up some sort of sexual relation with the Mayor's wife and daughter, it seems unlikely that the Mayor would have tolerated his carting them off on dates.

By the way, what do we say in Esperanto for Dating Sites on the Net - Rendevuejoj, Renkontejoj, Partnerejoj?
