Which tablet for lernu and other internet uses?

I'm considering whether to acquire a tablet. For the purpose of using Lernu!, surfing the internet, reading e-books (including colour pdfs) and email, which one would you favour? Would your choice enable skype? How about word-processing documents (at a basic level, at least)?

I have an Apple Macbook Air 11" and an iPad, both of which are roughly the same size. The Macbook's usability is by far better for all of the mentioned tasks, with the exception of e-book reading, due to lack of portrait orientation. Oh, and the iPad does games pretty well, too. Nearly all web tasks suck pretty bad on it. Tablets really aren't more than a fad, according to me.

heh.. i not use any tabolet but i use my mobile phone to read lernu and make an egzam..

Tablets are good for using content but not creating it. Anything you have to type - it's slow and burdensome on a tablet, especially if you're a person who can touch type.

So if you want it for reading e-books, reading news articles online, playing games - a tablet will be fine. If you want to write forum postings, create word processing documents, make a spreadsheet - a tablet is probably more trouble than it's worth.

I use an 11" netbook myself. I used to use a 10" and it became my primary computer, though it was underpowered, because it was so incredibly convenient. I went up an inch to get much better system specs on my current computer.

Not many new netbooks have come out, people say that they've fallen out of favor, that tablets are where things are going. But for creating content, sending e-mails, anything that involves some amount of typing - I just can't imagine doing that on a tablet. My computer goes almost everywhere with me. If tablets are going to replace netbooks, I feel like it would have to be tablets with an attachable keyboard, because an onscreen keyboard just doesn't cut it for creating a text of any length (even the length of this forum posting would have been slow and annoying to type on a tablet, particularly if it were in Esperanto, for which there is no word recognition software to make things easier)

I agree about being cautious if you plan to do a decent amount of typing. The only way I can see it being bearable for messages of decent length is if you use an Android tablet and learn to use Swype, or get one with an attachable keyboard. Even if you CAN touch type, it's basically impossible because the screen is a smooth surface without anything to ground you and remind you where the letters are. In any case, you should expect messages to take at least twice as long at first. I know my Android phone has a downloaded Esperanto keyboard with a built in dictionary, but it's not Swype. Should be the same for tablets?

I'm not too into tablets however, so I can't really give you much help if you still want one. Personally I'm a little confused about the Kindle Fire. Kindles were always eReaders with e Ink and some online capabilities but now it just seems like a generic tablet? I mean, you can always download the Kindle Apps on other tablets so I'm not sure what the appeal is to buy the Fire over a generic Android. @_@

Hyperboreus:Actually (a) voice input and (b) swype input are not really slow and burdensome. I dictate a lot of documents on my galaxy, then send the text file (So the typing is already done) to my PA and she takes care of making it look pretty and get rid of the strange voice recognition errors you get.
That's nice if you have a PA to do your work for you, or if you're working in a language that has voice recognition software.

Unfortunately if you want to do anything in Esperanto, that wouldn't be an option. Slow typing is the only way to do it.

Regarding Fire as opposed to another android tablet - price would be the reason to do it. Kindle Fire is just cheaper. Though I have heard that you can pay an extra $50 for a 7" tablet of another brand (Samsung? I forget) and get better system specs.

On my smartphone (I don’t own a tablet as I think it’s a combination of the disadvantages of smartphones and laptop computers), I don’t use any software to speed up typing in any language. According to my experience they cause more mistakes than they prevent.

Oh, seems you're right. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is 50 more for 1gb of RAM vs 512mb. Seems otherwise identical on the surface. It may be worth the money if multitasking is a high priority, especially for high memory things like videos. I have no idea how well 512 fares normally or if double that is a big deal though, but it should make things a bit faster when multitasking at the least.
Edit: Forgot to mention the Samsung has a more recent OS, if that matters any.
