I am trying to figure out how to describe what we call around here a "catbox." It is a box full of absorbent clay sand in which cats deposit their used food and drink. What is such a thing called? And would one use "purigi" to describe cleaning it?

Thanks again!

My guess would be "katrubujo"

From:

kato = cat
rubo = litter,rubbish
uj = container, box of

"Purigi" sounds fine to me!

Very useful, Eldanar, thank you. Tell me, would "katrubujeto" suggest a fairly small container rather than one of larger dimension? I have seen rubujo used to describe a trash can. While it's true we have a 27-pound cat from Egypt who probably could use a trash can-sized catbox, I'm still learning the nuances of the various affixes and here's a good chance to ask someone who knows. ridulo.gif

Hyperboreus:"Ĉiun matenon mi purigas la katnecesejon por ke ĝi ne malodoru."
malodoru → malbonodoru, fiodoru, odoru

Remember that "mal-" doesn't mean bad. It just means opposite. So "malodori" would be "to do the opposite of giving off an odor". I'm not sure what that is (perhaps filtering the air?), but I'm pretty sure it's not the right word here.

You could sanitarigi the katpisujon/katpisejon.

I didn't twig immediately what you meant by catbox, which I think is what we say in the UK for the cage/box for taking cats to the vet, referring to the cat's toilet as a litter tray.

You might make something with trogo - pis-trogo fek-trogo.

If you want to be pedantic they are more trogetoj than trogoj, but in a compound the initial element is enough not to make the compound misleading. The in-trays and out-trays in an office are leter-trogoj.

Cleaning out the cat's tray is I suppose just discarding the used litter and replacing it with new. You might refreŝigi.

Ĉu vi forgesis refreŝigi la katan neces-trogon? Io stinkas ĉi tie.

Ah, Sudanglo, I can't begin to thank you enough for the laughs you have given me. I'm still chuckling. You know, people speaking Esperanto make it function. Friends speaking it bring it life. Thank you. Neces-trogo it is. ridulo.gif
