I know that this is going to be a struggle. I am trying to figure out a cognate term for a woodworking word. I know the usual meaning of the word 'Caul'. That said, let's stick to woodworking.

A 'Caul' in woodworking is the name given to a device, usually made of wood, that is used to protect a wooden surface when it is being glued and clamped together.

It can be as simple as a piece of scrap wood that one puts between the jaw of the clamp and the wood being glued together, and as complex as a specially designed wooden beam or corner piece used to hold a corner of a box together or keep a table top even as the glue dries.

It often also functions as a way to spread the pressure exerted by the clamp.

I'm trying to figure out a term in Esperanto to name this semi common woodworking item. Thus far nothing has sprung to my mind despite consulting every print dictionary I own, plus internet sources.

In simple applications a caul would seem to be no more than a ŝirmilo or protektilo.

For more complex applications you could use kasko or kasketo (helmet).

This relates to the anatomical meaning of caul, and a kasko has the essential properties of being removable and protecting. It seems particularly apt for a corner-piece.

Looks like it's called a Zwischenplatte in German ("between plate", that would make it an "interplato" in Esperanto) and a "lamiere di carico" in Italian (that would make it a "ŝarĝplato" in Esperanto) and in some languages it's called the equivalent of a "pressure equalising plate" (that would be a prem-egaliga plato in Esperanto)

Ŝirmplato might be a nice compromise that would cover a wide variety of meanings.

I think those would be perfect. And if it's a corner caul, the root angul' would be utilized in the compound word.
