Follows a question and an answer I found on Snafu regarding the Esperanto people and it's habits. I don't know what your thoughts on it might be. I certainly would know what to say to this person.

«Anonymous asked:
Why do you find the Esperanto movement to be travelist and pro dinner party

The Esperanto movement is travelist and pro tea party because it considers the fact that people using a book with names and addresses in it to be a solution (la vojaĝa solvo - the travel solution) and that the problem to this solution is that people did not know who to call when in a new country (The realization of this aim is called by Esperantists la pasporta servo - the passport service) Esperanto is unquestionably Earthcentric, both mentally and habitually. For instance, they employ congresses for large meetings, dinner for small meetings, and the bulk of its native speakers is unquestionably from multi-cultural families.

Esperantists constantly promote their language as being " more suitable for communication" than other languages. This is only true if ones native language is different than the person one is talking to.

If travelling internationally, Esperanto would inevitably become an important vehicle of travel (as the English language can be), it would supplant lots of language confusion, particularly with people that do not speak the other language, and would lead to an understanding of local culture.

In short, Esperantists consider a lack of international contacts to be a problem and the solution to that problem is to have a published book with the names and contact details of Esperantists from around the world. In other words, Esperantists learn world culture, in a world which is obligingly accessible for anyone prepared to learn a common language, and in the houses of those that cater dinner before bed, (sometimes).

If that doesn't sound travelist and pro dinner party to you, i don't know what does.

I admit it, I'm travelist and pro dinner party.

I sometimes like to have friends over and feed them dinner. Sometimes we speak Esperanto at the same time. We communicate about our thoughts and ideas, and depending on the friends, we also exchange cultural information.

I will even let you in on a skeleton in Esperanto's closet. It goes beyond travelism and dinnerpartyism. Esperantists also meet in cafes and public places to communicate in their international language. Sometimes they go to museums to learn about other cultures and ideas together. As if their native language and their home culture wasn't enough!

Nooooo. Seriously? Oh the humanity! Next thing you know, they will be writing books, singing songs and trying to make movies!

Yes, or sitting in circles, playing a guitar, while singing songs about peace and friendship!

Not to worry, they are trying hard to kick the habit. The odd new book does come out now and then, but I haven't heard La Espero sung at a British Congress for a while, nor any film since Gerda Malaperis. Even that was a teaching film; there has been little if anything since Angoroj.

On the other hand, the next British congress is in Ramsgate, and there may be a few diehards and enthusiasts down there who might try to revive the himno, so you never know. rido.gif
