All right, erinja and tommjames! I just downloaded Tajpi again and it is working. I think I will keep both the Prefiksoj box (; + letter) and the Sufiksoj box (letter + x) checked, although experientation may bring about a change. One awkwardness: Does Caps Lock have to be on to get a capital supersigned letter? You're probably right about the ALT codes although with a little practice, you can get pretty fast with them.

tommjames, you are probably aware of the gnome-3 squabble in Linux. Last month Linux Mint 13 came out and it contains both MATE and Cinnamon. I'm going to use MATE because Cinnamon still has issues -- but it sure looks pretty. It is a LTS edition with support for five years. BTW, have you looked at LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition)?

I have Mint 11 on a desktop. Mint 11 loses its support in November. So, I think I will spend an hour or two this Saturday afternoon and install Mint 13 on that desktop and configure it to my satisfaction. Then I'll see about getting iBox working. Let's see... the first step is to make a pot of coffee....

On mac there are alternate keyboards which work very well, by replacing the unneeded letters. I even have a dvorak-esperanto one

Shouldn't have to be, no. Are you having a problem using the shift key as normal?

I am aware yes, and the whole situation with that horrible Gnome 3 thing makes me kind of sad. I've tried to use it but I just can't get along with the thing. I'll be using MATE when I upgrade to Debian 7.

As it happens yes, I've been tinkering about with it in a VM. All in all I prefer to just use Debian though.

tommjames, just wanted to say that I got Tajpi working now. For a while the shift key wouldn't work and I had to put the Caps Lock on to get a capital. But its working fine now. Nice little program. I really like it. Erinja said that she only had trouble with the word 'auxiliary'. Try typing 'Linux'. It's no problem remembering to hit the 'x' key twice, though. I wonder if checking the Prefiksoj box and using ;+letter would eliminate that? I'll try it sometime.

Also, Linux Mint 13, MATE edition, is up and running fine on my spare desktop. It looks and feels rock solid. It's good to have a solution to the Gnome-3 catastrophe. The MATE and Cinnamon developers deserve a huge round of applause. Hope you have the same success with Debian 7 MATE. Mint 13 has been out for less than a month now and there were 213 updates. The developers are keeping busy.

I installed ibus via the terminal without any problems but I haven't gotten it to work yet. You gave me instructions but you have to remember that Mint -- even though it is based on Ubuntu and, further back, on Debian -- has its own menu that is quite different from both Ubuntu and Debian. I might go on the Mint forums sometimes and try for an answer, although trying to explain what I want it for might be more trouble than it is worth. Mi daŭrigas legi la babiladon je la "Le sigh" fadeno. Mi konsentas kun vi, ke ne estas necese.

It isn't necessary that I have ibus though. I always type into my word processor and cut and paste into Lernu's posting box. This gives me the ability to rewrite and edit to my satisfaction without keeping Lernu open.

I really don't understand why you don't want to try an 3rd-level enabled layout. I think all modern gnome distros probably enclude altgr to create esperanto supersignoj as a default toggle-able option in the GUI keyboard options.

I mean, it's great that you've found extra software that works for you, but it just seems so inelegant when all modern OSes come with the ability to support Esperanto keyboard layouts in-the-box (though in the case of Windows, you would have to download somebody else's or create your own using Microsoft's MKLC software).

Yes if you use prefixes instead then you obviously wouldn't get that issue. You'd need to make sure you disable the suffixes though.

Just run ibus-setup from the terminal.

Well, I suppose it is because Esperanto is just an interesting hobby to me and I am a bit lazy. I don't see the necessity of making any more changes to my computers than I have to. If something works, I am happy. If something comes along that works better, OK. I'll try that too. I suppose I started this thread because I was looking for a better way of doing something. I found two better ways: Tajpi and the esperanto.typeit link that you gave me. I consider myself the winner.

This is slightly theoretical for me because I don't use Linux, but I do use a customized keyboard to give me the Euro € and the pound £ for the few instances when I need them. Theoretically doing Esperanto would be no problem.

.... but I use Tajpi with the x-method, because I am used to typing using the x-method. The brilliant thing is that when I'm not on my computer, I have to change *nothing* about the way I type. I don't even have to think about it, I just type in my normal x-method, and it comes out as x-method. And in most places on the Esperanto internet (dictionaries, etc) that allow very much typing also accept x-method input, so I still don't have to think about a single thing, don't need to think about what computer I'm using before typing something, etc.

I barely even notice it when I read x-method text versus text with the appropriate letters.
