In recent conversations in the Esperanto threads, I've seen apogi used in the context of supporting a political candidate.

Reading those messages threw me at first as I was thinking "lean" initially. It didn't take more than a moment to figure out the intent but, I'm wondering if the more appropriate word wouldn't instead be "subteni" in that context?

Are both equally appropriate?

Just curious.

Thanks,
Kelly

Looking at the PIV (online) it looks like both can be used in this fashion. Still, subteni seems more natural to me. Is one word more commonly accepted/used than the other?

Thanks,
Kelly

I use subteni for political candidates, I don't use apogi for that meaning.

I can understand why a few people would use "apogi" for the metaphorical meaning, though, and I wouldn't consider it wrong. You can choose which one you prefer.

I've seen "subteni" used this way much more often than "apogi" which, (to my ear, at least) suggests physically leaning against something, or propping it up. However, it doesn't seem to be blatantly wrong to use the latter. Your call.

I've absolutely no idea why, but for some reason using 'subteni' in this context conjures up a negative image. I'm much more inclined to use 'apogi'.
