OK, I wasn't active in Esperanto between 1981 and about a few weeks ago. . .
So what brought you back?

What one really wants is an audio or audio/visual conference type chat room where you can eavesdrop on conversations and join in to the extent that you feel confident, without any pressure to say anything at all if you don't want to.
I think that's an excellent idea and it really doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to organize. There's plenty of free conferencing software and also plenty of Esperantists.

Where's the barrier here?

Maybe that people in different countries might not be able to make the same time slot? I suppose the closer geographically, the easier that might be.

I did consider that, but it just seems like you could find enough people who could get together to make something happen.

Maybe have a few of them at different times for people in different parts of the world.

That's a good question that I'm not sure I have an answer for.

We hold regular Video Hangouts on Google Plus, "Kunvidejoj" as we call them, which was where I first spoke Esperanto with others. I have however lost track of how exactly they are being organized. Also, the time is usually inconvenient for azianoj. Here's a coordination page: http://pauxleto.com/kunvidejo

Sounds like any such scheme should be on three time cycles. One for Asian participants, one for Europeans and one for Americans (North and South). Assuming of course that you are aiming for a time that's more or less "prime time" in the designated area, when the greatest number of people would be able to participate.

I'd make any such setup open to any area, of course. One of the primary reasons for doing something like this would be to practice pronunciation with people who aren't from your area. It might be worth staying up a little late or getting up an hour early for something like that.

Right, so my idea has already been implemented. But just what is Google Plus? And what is the minimum amount of information you have to give to Google Plus to use the service.

I'm already fed up with having to supply yet more information to the Data-hungry Monster, and having to record yet another password.

Is it possible to view archives of the video chats, once you have given them your pound of data flesh?

No, and rightfully so. Would you as beginner want to see your baby steps in esperanto documented for posterity?

We did video clips with greeting messages in the beginning, though. Search "Kunvidejo" on Youtube. The ones with me in them are particularly embarrassing. okulumo.gif
