Here is an easy target. Who would like to attack first?

Here are the rules to follow before you start typing anything on the encylopaedic knowledge of the writer and his well researched article:

(1) Be nice, don't use dirty words
(2) Offer facts to refute claims
(3) Remember, Esperantists are not al-Quaeda, so no suicide missions.

1. Mention of Solresol but no mention of Volapük?

2. What's with the logo of the Esperantista Centra Oficejo?

If Esperanto speakers go out bashing writers of articles who get things wrong, it makes us look small-minded and defensive.

As a matter of fact, I wouldn't say that this writer necessarily got anything wrong; she said that Esperanto may be on its way down, but that's a matter of opinion, and surely an Esperanto speaker could politely write in with their own opinion, that Esperanto has remained quite successful, given the odds being stacked against it as they are.

Thanks! I was only joking! I was alluding to some (and fortunately they are only a small fraction) speakers who would now go to great lengths to correct the author and thus make themselves look like trolls.

Could you please read your sentence again? You are confusing "opinion" with "facts."

The number of Esperantists can be either increasing or decreasing (or remain static) but it can't be both ways. So she is either right or wrong. There is no other way, no place for "opinions."

By the way, that's a powerful weapon at the hands of religious bigots and all other kinds of people. You say that earth is spherical is true, well I don't believe it. So we don't try to force our opinions on each other. o_O

The number of Esperantists is on way up/is diminishing is a very vague fact anyway.

Apart from the difficulty of deciding what level of competence constitutes an Esperantist, it is, in practice, impossible to determine how many people are learning, or have at one time learnt some Esperanto.

However judging from the achievements in recent years. I'd say Esperanto is clearly on the way up in term of accessibility of resources and public visibility.

Because of the the rise of the Internet, even Joe Bloggs's pet language project Supermondalingua may in this respect be on the way up, but of course you have to compare scale and quality.

She said that it "seems to be" spiralling down. That sounds like an opinion to me. "Seem" is a subjective term; it describes a person's impression of something.

If I say that it seems to be a nice day today, someone else could say that it doesn't seem very nice to them at all.

It's an opinion, and she's entitled to it, though we may disagree.

An opinion should be based on facts. Without them it is only some kind of gibberish. Since no decent research has been made on this subject, no one really knows whether esperanto is going up or down.

Urban legends:

1. No one speaks esperanto
2. Everyone speaks English
