Please visit BritaKongreso.org and tell me which photo's of Ramsgate would most make you want to visit the town, or which photo's leave you cold. You need to click to enlarge.

Tre bela! I didn't know Ramsgate was so pretty. The smaller beach photos look a bit like Criccieth in Wales. Is it a blue flag beach?

Now I hope you're not going to make me all crestfallen by saying they only took all the nice typical postcard photos and that the rest of Ramsgate is like 1980s Rhyl.

What's that?
If I'm right (and it's still in operation) it's a standard by which beaches are measured for cleanliness. Quite a lot of beaches and seas had a bit of a sewage problem in the past.

That ram is terrifying.

Come on - surely the ram is very jolly.

Yes Vestitor, the photo's aren't misleading in respect of the harbour and seafront area. There are less attractive parts back from the coast, but if I can finally tie up the booking for the Kongresejo, the congress will take place 3 mins walk from the harbour.

My plan is to invite participation also from NE France and Belgium (the cross-channel links are good) and therefore make next year's British congress much more international than usual. You can actually cross with your car from Ostend and arrive at the port lying to the West of the harbour and then it is only a 5 minutes walk into the town.

We are building the website at the moment and can drop or conserve or replace within the photo selection, hence the seeking of opinion about the attractiveness of the current set.

More details are available in the Forum section of the Britakongreso website under various topic headings. If anybody from Lernu would like to indicate that are interested in coming, this would be helpful. One of the major problems in organizing is getting an idea of how much you might have available from the kotizoj to spend on the congress.

PS Yes, the beaches round here are regularly tested for sea water quality and the results posted for all to see, so blue flag as I understand it.

I like the photos

But my vote is "creepy" on the ram.

I didn't like the butterfly on a leaf photo. It could be anywhere.

I gotta admit, I was initially a bit puzzled regarding the use of a demon as a mascot.

Then I realized it was a ram, and not a cartoon demon at all. But, uh... yeah, a bit creepy on first blush. Maybe it's because Oregon isn't sheep country, so I don't have an immediate association. I don't know.

I'm thinking that in this focus group, the ram maybe isn't doing particularly well.

The pictures are nice, though. Looks like a very charming place, and certainly one worth visiting.

The choice of a Ram practically made itself. There is a tradition going back at least 60 years of the Town using a Ram in its Tourist publicity. Usually the Ram is jumping over a gate (yes, Ramsgate, I know, not very original).

It never occurred to me at all that some might see it as 'creepy' or menacing. The chap is carrying an Esperanto flag - does that not immmediately negate any malevolent intentions?

Anyway, thanks all, for the feedback on the pics. Erinja, I had the same thought about the butterflies. I didn't choose that one - that was a kunlaboranto. The connection comes through the caption (King George VI park).

Ramsgate is an unusual place in some respects. I believe it is the only town to have its own Time and Meridian officially recognised by Greenwich. It was actually on an island at the time of the Norman invasion (silt later filled the channel between the island and the mainland). It's the only town with an officially designated Royal Harbour, and it has more listed buildings than any other town in Kent (including nearby mediaeval Sandwich). It also has a network of tunnels in the chalk running under many of the main streets of the town, which were used for shelter from the air raids in WWII with an accommodation capacity of 40,000 people, twice the wartime population.
